The door wont go back to how it was before. The cleaner should be forking out for the cost of a new door. If it's in the laundry, was it painted along the bottom edge? Doesn't sound like it. What cleaner would flood the floor to clean it!!! Re: What to do about flooded door? 3Feb 11, 2011 3:34 pm Heh, thanks for making me laugh. I've been kinda miffed about it all. The top of the door isn't painted, so I assume the bottom edge isn't either, though I can't see or feel it. The cleaner wasn't very experienced from what he told me. It just seems such a waste to get a new door. I was hoping it would go back to a less unsightly condition that I can live with. Re: What to do about flooded door? 4Feb 11, 2011 3:38 pm If you can live with it, then leave it. If it were painted top and bottom, it would have been sealed and more than likely prevented this from happening. The cleaner also NOT flooding the floor would have prevented this from happening lol. Re: What to do about flooded door? 5Feb 11, 2011 3:44 pm I'll try to live with it. I think I'm going to need some time though. I'm still a bit irritated at the moment. I have a handyman coming for other things next week. I'll ask if there's anything he can do, but probably not. Thanks for your help. Re: What to do about flooded door? 6Feb 11, 2011 3:50 pm Hi blueberry, My builder managed to flood my home on numerous occasions throughout my build (it's a lengthy and boring story) and I discovered that pretty much anything that is wood-like (for example doors) in new homes simply has to be ripped out and replaced once it becomes waterlogged. The amount of skirting, architrave and cabinetry that was replaced in my home was just ridiculous. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but I doubt there is much that your handyman can do to assist. I agree with Erin; just get your cleaner to pay you for a new door (or take that amount out of what you have to pay them). Good luck Re: What to do about flooded door? 7Feb 11, 2011 3:58 pm Hi grom40, Thanks for the advice. My cleaner's company has insurance, so I think they will replace it. It's just such a waste, that's all. I'm sure the door can be reused or recycled somehow? Anyway, I'll see if I can live with it first. It seems like you have had worse luck with your builder than I had with my cleaner. Re: What to do about flooded door? 8Feb 15, 2011 11:44 am It can be fixed, but that'd require time and effort. Unfortunately nowaydays labour costs're so high that it's cheaper to trash and replace than to fix, unless DIY. If it's hollow door with a timber frame, it's possible to cut away the strips of swollen patricle board cladding, glue the replacement strips on, fill, sand and paint. If the frame is chipboard, it's much more difficult and not worth it. In my house I've painted the tops and bottoms of all doors to the wet areas - bath, WC, laundry. It was sealed top and bottom however there was a hole in the top and bottom used for the hot glue to be able to dry when they make the doors. Anyway with a heavey storm one day water got on the top fell through the hole then the inside of the door swelled up. I gave it a few weeks to come back down. It came back to 90% then I with very coarse sand paper then changed to more smooth paper. Once that was finished I undercoated and re painted the door. I also sealed up the holes on the top and bottom of the door so no water can get in again.
