Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Feb 07, 2011 8:37 pm Hi I am converting my garage into a studio and have a dilemma regarding putting in an extra door. I have raised the floor and have now realised (due to my own poor planning) that there is not enough clearance between the raised floor and the top of the archways (which used to encompass the garage roller doors) to put a standard height door. I have requested a quote for arched french doors or a single door with an arched top but have a feeling it will be too expensive for my budget and may not even be possible. If the door is square, I could only fit a door 180cm high in. This doesn't bother me as I am only short but I want to comply with the relevant building regulations (it could look a little odd too). The other option is to include a step up into the door so that it is a standard door that sits below the raised floor and opens outwards. I am concerned that this will look silly and again, I am not sure whether it is okay with regards to regulations. My last option is to cut out an instep around the door inside my internal floor. This will make the room seem smaller and may not look great, but should allow me to put in a standard sized door. Is anyone able to help me with regards to solutions and what will comply with building regulations. I cannot cut into the arch as it will affect the structural integrity of the archway and the roof may collapse. Also, is it normal to have exterior doors that open outwards? Thanks Shaz Re: Not enough height for a standard door 2Feb 08, 2011 6:59 am To my knowledge there is no regulation about door sizes... Re: Not enough height for a standard door 4Feb 13, 2011 9:33 pm although not the best solution you can fit the frames behind the arches this means the frames can be square and the door open inwards at the max height, i don't think there's a min height for doors Re: Not enough height for a standard door 5Feb 15, 2011 10:22 am bashworth In Australia I occasionally find a door that opens outwards but its certainly not common.
