Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Jan 18, 2011 9:12 am I've been looking at Corinthian internal doors. There is a significant price difference between the honeycomb core and medium density fibre (polyboard). The honeycomb ones weigh approximately 15kg and the medium density fibre ones weigh between 30-35kg. The heavier ones are around 300% more expensive. Do you think they are worth it? I know they more solid and will possibly be better sound insulators? But what other differences are there? Re: Cheap Vs expensive internal doors 2Jan 18, 2011 11:48 am When you say 300% more expensive are we talking $20 to $60 (no big deal) or $100 to $300 (a big deal if there are over 10 doors in the house). I bough semi solid doors and door jambs for around 120 they was expensive because i had opted for tall (2340) doors. I am looking at the Corinthian Balmoral range... Re: Cheap Vs expensive internal doors 6Jan 18, 2011 12:13 pm remember to ask the builder how much they charge for the doors - the Corinthian pricing is their retail price - the builder will add extra cost to supply and install. Not through a builder. I am just wondering if there are any other benefits with having heavier doors. Re: Cheap Vs expensive internal doors 8Jan 18, 2011 12:34 pm benefit of heavier doors in that case is the paint finish you can achieve. if you are going gloss enamel on smooth skin cheap doors are no good and you see the ripples in the door after you paint. Re: Cheap Vs expensive internal doors 9Jan 18, 2011 2:03 pm Hi blue, I've also gone the balmoral in my design but it is specifically for the sound reduction. With open plan houses I find that noise comes from a lot of places. Even though the kids bedrooms will be upstairs, I find that sound still travels and can be annoying. I have two teenagers who play music(as in musicians), sing as well as play computer games with lots of noise. Paying the extra to get that shut out is worth it in my books. Other reasons are also that they are more rigid and will withstand a lot, have better finishes to paint on and can always be filled and re-drilled if you ever wanted to change the door furniture. my 2cents... However the surface layer is much thicker and as such you get a flatter finish. Re: Cheap Vs expensive internal doors 14Mar 22, 2011 9:35 pm Balmoral is smooth but where the grooves are it's not. I assume the grooves must first be sanded down a bit? Re: Cheap Vs expensive internal doors 15Mar 22, 2011 9:43 pm We are also going Balmoral throughout. 2340mm. Doing it for sound. Kids, shiftworker, visitors etc. I think the rebated area will require some sanding as it is routed MDF. Maybe undercoat and then lightly sand for a really smooth finish. alsom sand between coats with fine grade paper or wet&dry Re: Cheap Vs expensive internal doors 16Mar 22, 2011 9:45 pm I remember going to see a house as was thinking of buying - it was not cheap. Okay, then the choice is really about the build quality of the door itself which means the brand name. Sorry I can't recommend one or the other so best to rely on comments… 5 3228 1. Roof cleaning and paint - which colour do you recommend? I often see black/ dark grey in use these days but I would prefer… 0 8310 Thanks. Yeh ideally that would have been good, but have progressed too far now. Hoping some well placed internal walls fixed up into the battens will provide some… 2 5369 |
