Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Jan 16, 2011 10:18 pm My husband and I have just purchased our first home in Canberra. There are currently no blinds or curtains installed and I was hoping to get some advice about honeycomb / cellular blinds from anyone who has used them: 1) Did you opt for light-filtering, room darkening or blockout honeycomb blinds? 2) Can people outside see through the light-filtering blinds if the lights indoors are turned on at night? 3) How robust are the honeycomb blinds? (I have a boisterous 2 year old boy running around the house) 4) How do you clean honeycomb blinds? Does it get dusty easily? 5) Has anyone paired honeycomb blinds with sunscreen blinds so that you can still have a view during the day whilst maintaining privacy? 6) Is it true you can get a rebate for installing honeycomb blinds? Where can I find further information on this? 7) Where did you purchase your honeycomb blinds from? Thanks in advance for any advice! Re: Need advice on honeycomb / cellular blinds 2Jan 16, 2011 11:57 pm 1) light filter for living areas, blockout for sleeping areas. If you fit the blockout into the reveal then you get almost complete darkness even during the day. 2) If you stand about 1 metre from the blind you can just make out a vague silhouette from the outside - else nothing. 3) Ok they will crease if you bend them. They don't tend to tear. Quality varies - Luxaflex is good but you pay for it 4) Dust repellent. Apparently there are pros that can do it. Some people reckon you can just dip them in soapy water and let out to dry. Creepy crawlies sometimes nest in them but not obvious unless you look closely. 5) The Duo mechanism in Luxaflex is more expensive. Nice idea but didn't bother. 6) Not to my knowledge 7) We used an internet seller - Beautiful blinds who use Nordiclight and was a lot cheaper - but plenty of others our there. Luxaflex tends to be the most prominent brand and most expensive. Shop around. Most give you samples to test and batter. Re: Need advice on honeycomb / cellular blinds 3Jan 17, 2011 8:05 am My parents put Luxaflex blinds in previous and current house so answering from the perspective of living with them. 1) Did you opt for light-filtering, room darkening or blockout honeycomb blinds? Mixture in first house, but found the blockout wasn't great in living areas at all - just too dark. Currently have light-filtering only. 2) Can people outside see through the light-filtering blinds if the lights indoors are turned on at night? Not really. Vague shapes at most if you get up close. You can tell the lights are on behind it but not much else. 3) How robust are the honeycomb blinds? (I have a boisterous 2 year old boy running around the house) The vertiglide (covering a sliding door) is not robust; I have toddlers also and we have to be constantly making sure they leave it alone. The ones on the windows seem to survive fairly well - they get pushed up and played with a bit, but again, we do tend to stop them playing much with it. 4) How do you clean honeycomb blinds? Does it get dusty easily? Haven't had to clean them - they've been in some years. Assuming nothing is inside the cells, then I would say an occasional gentle wipe with a damp cloth would be enough. That's all we do and they look pretty much as new. 5) Has anyone paired honeycomb blinds with sunscreen blinds so that you can still have a view during the day whilst maintaining privacy? No, but it could work well. I am thinking hard about a big west-facing window in my new house and might do something like this. You'd probably want the blinds within the reveal for this. 6) Is it true you can get a rebate for installing honeycomb blinds? Where can I find further information on this? As they have an insulating value, I can imagine they could be eligible for a rebate but I don't know about one. 7) Where did you purchase your honeycomb blinds from? In my parents case, I think it was DJs for the most recent ones. You can check the Luxaflex site for their retailers, or just look around for other brands. Status: sold our first house, moved in with parents, bought our second in Pakenham, still planning to build in a few years time. Re: Need advice on honeycomb / cellular blinds 4Jan 18, 2011 3:17 pm xtremehuzzah My husband and I have just purchased our first home in Canberra. There are currently no blinds or curtains installed and I was hoping to get some advice about honeycomb / cellular blinds from anyone who has used them: 1) Did you opt for light-filtering, room darkening or blockout honeycomb blinds? Blockout all around as they are only down at night - except on 1 west-facing window 2) Can people outside see through the light-filtering blinds if the lights indoors are turned on at night? the experts with light-filtering have already replied to that one! 3) How robust are the honeycomb blinds? (I have a boisterous 2 year old boy running around the house) They get creased if bash into them but recover OK because they have a memory when you fold them back up again. We had one get knocked around pretty badly, which I can see when I'm close to it but i bet noone else would ever notice. 4) How do you clean honeycomb blinds? Does it get dusty easily? I don't know why, but I've noticed mine don't get as dusty as venetians. Then again, it may be that this house isn't as dusty as our last one. Apparently they are washable. 5) Has anyone paired honeycomb blinds with sunscreen blinds so that you can still have a view during the day whilst maintaining privacy? No need for us as no need for privacy but i think it may look odd & not sure how the top fittings would work. I guess you would put the honeycomb against the window & fit the roller blinds slightly higher? 6) Is it true you can get a rebate for installing honeycomb blinds? Where can I find further information on this? When it existed we used the gov't green loan scheme to pay for ours. 7) Where did you purchase your honeycomb blinds from? Beautiful Blinds. Thanks in advance for any advice! You're welcome! Re: Need advice on honeycomb / cellular blinds 5Feb 01, 2011 12:20 pm Answer to 1-3 in one go - The light filtering are very robust & can even be scrunched up and will sit back into place. The block out fabric isn't as soft & will show creases a little more easier but excellent for blocking out the light. Generally the fabrics are anti static so they repel the dust. Alight vacuum can help if you think they need it. Depending on size they can be washed at home in tepid water in a bath but you can also get them ultrasonically cleaned by a professional. You could do a combination of a roller & the honeycomb - this would work best if the roller could be mounted into the recess of the window with the honeycomb installed onto the outside. The other option is the twin honeycomb with sheer fabric & second fabric for dual operation. Not sure about the rebate - sorry Yes Luxaflex do have them, so do Designed blinds now - exact same blind as Luxaflex, made in same factory just have different labels. They come with good warranty & product does last. Thank you so much for the effort. We will use it to talk with builder. We also had idea of building duplex instead and seeking suggest ions. viewtopic.php?f=31&t=106744 11 13830 Levelling compound Ardit is the best but buy a bag of sand and make sand dam to protect your wood floor 2 15250 XCEM Alpha flooring seems to relatively new and I could not found any reviews.
