Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Jan 13, 2011 2:56 pm Howdy. This summer and after a few humid days the door that connects the house with the garage has been sticking. But, not at the top or bottom but right in the middle where the locking mechanism is. When it cools down after awhile the door seems to fix itself. I've tried tightening the screws on the hinges and the lock itself to no avail. Any thoughts on how to fix this? Also note, the bottom and top of the door is not painted (sealed). Is this normal? I've heard moisture can get into the door and cause sticking. Re: Sticking Doors 2Jan 13, 2011 4:19 pm If the door is properly sealed on all edges, including top and bottom it is much less likely to expand on damp days. Before you seal the door however you need to wait for a dun of hot dry days to make sure all the moisture is out. If that isn't enough Probably the easiest solution is to see how much gap there is is between the door and the frame when the door is closed at the hinges at the the hinge. If there is a gap you can take the door off and deepen the rebates on the door and the frame with a chisel deepen each rebate by 1/3rd the amount of the original gap. Re: Sticking Doors 4Jan 14, 2011 12:02 am quick tip,if theres a 3-5mm gap down the hinge side you can take the hinges off.put the hinge on a solid base with the leafs closed.get an old chisel or better still a 50mm bolster and witha few sharp taps to the crease of the hinge leaf you can close the leaf gap on the hinge.refit the hinges and check your not hinge bound[close the door and you,ll feel it if it is as the hinges will feel like a bit of a spring and try to bend the door jamb].most hinges have at least a 4-5mm gap in the leafs when closed so in most cases you,ll be fine.if it is hinge bound then just take the hinge off and chisel just the back ecge of 1 side out to set the hinge deeper at the rear. sounds complicated but trying to describe what to do is hard.shouldnt take anymore than 2 minutes per hinge and you have no repainting to do. Re: Sticking Doors 5Jan 14, 2011 5:02 am From my experience its certainly not unusual for the top and bottoms of doors to miss getting sealed particularly when the height of the door has to be adjusted. Re: Sticking Doors 6Jan 14, 2011 10:44 am There is an easier way. Replace your hinges with "The Original Adjustable Door Hinges". They allow you to move your door up or down, side to side or in and out to stop sticking. Most sticking is due to settling and changing weather conditions. If the door sticks again, just adjust it. They install with just a screwdriver and a pair of pliers. You can see them at www.fixastickingdoor.com.
