Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Nov 30, 2010 2:31 pm Hi all, For our build, we upgraded our ceiling heights to 9 foot. Along with the increased ceiling height, the builder also increased windows by 1 foot. The ceiling height is FANTASTIC - but I am now having trouble finding inexpensive options for window coverings. On most living room windows and all sliding doors, the drop from the top architraves is around 2450mm. Ready made curtains/blinds etc do not drop this far - 2200 is the max I think... Custom made will be almost 3 times the price. Has anyone seen a inexpensive solution to this dilemma? All advice appreciated. Regards ALf. Re: 2450mm window top to floor - no readymades fit -arrgh! h 2Dec 12, 2010 6:46 am Ikea has a range of curtains with a very long drop. We had the same problem in a bedroom in a house we moved in to and I bought extra long curtains from Ikea and took them up and hemmed them myself, our window drop was 2450mm. The only problem with the curtain was that they were not lined, I bought two sets and hung them together to create 'thicker' curtains. Re: 2450mm window top to floor - no readymades fit -arrgh! h 3Dec 12, 2010 7:25 am Gummerson also do a range of ready made pinch pleats with a drop of 2500, but not sure if they do an even longer drop. We have the same problem in the master bedroom. We had our window coverings custom made for the main living areas (due to needing an unusual colour more than anything) but I was hoping to do ready mades for the bedrooms.... until I realised just how long the master bedroom ones would need to be. The Gummerson ones are the longest I've found so far, I haven't checked out Ikea yet though. The extra long drops may not be something that is readily stocked by most of the shops, so it may pay to ring some of the manufacturers and see exactly what they do make. You may be pleasantly surprised. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. I've been researching like crazy and these are the choices I have come up with that won't blow my budget. I have yet to make a final choice As mentioned - Ikea curtains are all 2.5 meters long. Nearest Ikea is 1.5 hours so I havent been down to check out the quality. Freedom has 2 different types of curtains that are EXTRA LONG measuring 2.5 meters. One is called Shatung and I think the price is $59 each. This fabric is a synthetic silk shatung type. They also have another style (maybe called Hilary?) that is a more natural linen weave. Curtains are fairly thick. Eyelet style or tab top. Currently running a sale til end of Jan at 25%. One of these styles is being discontinued...I can't remember which one. I'm American and the thought to order online from the USA occurred to me - especially with the Aussie dollar being so strong. Crate and Barrel's online store offers 96 inch lengths in range of colors from $40each for linen sheers. The Pottery Barn offers lengths going up to 124 inches and ranges in price from $15 to $39 for the sheers or linens all the way up to $180 for the raw silk. 96 inches = 2438mm 108 inches = 2743mm 124 inches = 3149 mm If you buy from the States, shipping the curtains should be a nonissue but you will need to get the rod here in Australia. Freedom has both single and double rods that extend over 3meters at reasonable prices and I saw some not-so-fancy ones available at Spotlight as well. I'm not sure if I am allowed to provide links to outside sources but you can just google those two stores. Both are reputable. Also, if you are unhappy you can return for full refund although you will have to pay for the freight back since it outside the USA. They were on a fairly decent special as well!!! About 50% off! We were pretty happy about that! Thanks for your replies, they will be appreciated when the time comes to redecorate!
