Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Oct 26, 2010 9:07 pm Hi All, When we signed up with with M, we got a fancy front door, 6G Timber Corinthian door as part of their promotion. (Still doing prelim contract) I don't know if it's old fashioned or not, but I still quite like the idea of a security door - for security when answering the front door. As the house will face a not so quiet street, I doubt we'll have it open a lot for ventilation. However of course it means that if we get one we'll be covering the nice door. These days I've noticed most don't have security doors for this reason? Love to get people's opinions on this Re: Front door/security door 2Oct 26, 2010 9:14 pm Hi, we are putting an ornate security door on the front of ours when we move in, but it will be used for ventilation and we will be in a very quiet street. I have a brilliant screen door now, one of those crimsafe ones that you can see through. My thoughts were the same as yours, but after a lot of consideration I would feel a lot safer with a screen door, I also LOVE opening doors for fresh air so I will use the flyscreen. My screen door looks really neat and I spose you just have a pick a screen door that doesn't stick out like a sore thumb, but yes, you probably would lose the effect of your pretty doors Maybe if you were really worried about the security factor and you chose not to put on screen door, you could 'up' secruity in other areas, like a fence with high gate etc??? Just be careful here. High fences that you can't see through may decrease security. One of the ways that security is increased in public spaces is to make lots of open sight lines so anybody doing the wrong thing can be seen. The criminals go to someplace else where they cant be seen. Same applies to homes. Which one are you going to burgle. The one behind the big fence, where once you get over the fence nobody can see what you are doing, or the one that's open and all the people in the street can see you trying to get in? I know, sounds counter intuitive till you see it like that. I'm not planning on having a screen door as I have openable windows on the front of the house (for ventilation and "seeing who is at the door" purposes). Does your door have any glass so you will be able to see who it is without opening the door? If you're really concerned about security you could always put in one of those chains on the inside of the door (like they have in hotels)? These days I've noticed most don't have security doors for this reason? Love to get people's opinions on this Is that a pivot door? Just be aware that due to the pivot, when open a small section of the door (from pivot to frame) will protrude out past the door frame and you may not be able to have a security door. If it's not a pivot just ignore me. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Front door/security door 10Oct 27, 2010 5:35 pm Having fitted Security Doors and "Crimsafe" type screens for the past 20 years there are a few things to consider: 1) Type of front door. You have a nice door and although a crimsafe type door will let you see out of it quite easily, you still will have trouble seeing the nice door from outside. I see a picture above shows this very well. 2) Pivot doors you cant screen! which may solve your problem easily. 3) Cross breezes. You may be able to get a cross breeze through other windows nearby allowing you not to have a screen on the front entrance door. 4) Steel doors that match the timber doors can be very expensive...... very 5) Double Doors if you have them look nice but are not very safe as you have to try and fix one of them and they can only be fixed with some sort of dead bolt (usually into a soft timber sill and head) 6) On a side note..... insurance may require you to have security of some description on the front door. Maybe a dead lock is all that is required. Just check because if burglars get in, its easier to take large TV's out through a door then a window! If you havent thought about these things, I thought I would let you knowas I go through all of these options when I see people.. Hope it helps Billy Re: Front door/security door 11Oct 30, 2010 8:39 am Thank you for all thos that replied, most helpful.
