Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Oct 01, 2010 1:43 pm I have purchased an old bungalow and am hoping to give the stained glass windows a good clean and lift. Does anyone know what the best product is to do this and how to do this??? Thanks Re: Stained glass windows 2Oct 05, 2010 8:28 pm I bought some old windows off ebay they'd be over 100 years old. The glass was very cloudy so I used very wet 0000 grade steel wool they came up fabulously well. All the prior attempts with vinegar, glass cleaners etc removed some of the gunge but going over it very gently with the steel wool worked extremely well - ymmv Re: Stained glass windows 3Oct 07, 2010 1:44 am Thank you so much for your reply. I will definitely give that a go. It sounds like it worked for you, so hopefully it will work for me. Re: Stained glass windows 4Oct 07, 2010 4:46 pm As I say it worked straight off, your windows maybe different to mine but now I have sparkling clean windows that are now translucent but were very cloudy looking before, do a test spot first to see what you think. All the best! Re: Stained glass windows 5Oct 24, 2010 4:17 am Use a heavy sponge and dishwashing liquid. For the metal if its oxidised use only the lightest grade of steel wool if you must but in truth an old stiff nail brush will do it. keep the area you are working in wet. You can get the patina from a lead light / copper foil supplier and they also sell the putty (you might need some) and a polishing compound liquid (its about $12 but it can take small scratches out of glass, mobile phones). The patina is very important, its the coating that protects the lead from oxidisation. When it breaks down the lead will begin to grey out and start to create veins of white lead oxide. The white powder is what makes you sick and its also the beginning of the end of your windows. No matter what, re-apply the patina once every so often to keep the metal sealed. The putty is easy, lighten it with linseed oil (2 drops in table spoon clump) and then use a sponge and a brush to push it into the voids. Then clean the glass with kitchen paper only and gently - then finish the metal with patina and use the polishing compound to finish the entire window. The metal will shine like new... Use the polishing compound and patina every few years and the window will always look clean and new. An old toothbrush is really good for the metal work, cleans of oxidised parts and gets out any loose putty. (try to keep it sealed and stable). The patina is acidic and can burn you so be careful with it. Just use a 1 inch or 20mm flat oil brush to apply it. A little goes a long way. Rinse very thoroughly with water. Re: Stained glass windows 6Oct 24, 2010 5:38 pm I had tried an old toothbrush & dishwashing detergent but it did very little - I cleaned my windows many times using different ideas (from google) trying to get the grunge off nothing worked for me until I used the 0000 steel wool. It just washed off very easily and I was extremely careful Thanks for the ideas about maintaining the leadlight - something I will definitely look into and I hope the original poster also does this.
