Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Sep 20, 2010 10:14 pm We are owner building an extension on our home and finishing off all the last details for the plans. The last thing I a stuck on is windows. Facing our backyard we have a 5m wide lounge and dining seperated by a wall. For the lounge I have decided on two 1200mm wide x 2100 high windows leaving enough room on either end for lounge and TV cabinetry. For the dining I would like windows centered in the middle of the room. More than likely sliding windows as they seem to be the best for air flow and blocking flies and also to match the rest of the house. Was toying with the following possibles (all 2100mm high) - 3000m slider but worried it wil be too wide to blind easily - 2400m slider and 2x 600mm windows joined to either side but not sure what type of windows would look good attached to slider??? Thoughts??? Re: Need help for what windows to put on a 5m wall 2Sep 20, 2010 10:28 pm Why not have just fixed panels? If you have enough opening sashes, then fixed panels are both inexpensive and go with any style window, all while taking advantage of the natural light and views. Other thoughts were louvers?? or casement? windows but guys from stegbar didnt think casement would look very good. Re: Need help for what windows to put on a 5m wall 4Sep 21, 2010 1:26 pm I wouldn't go with louvres, they are notoriously poor in performance with regards to energy efficiency and noise insulation. Time and time again people replace them with normal windows, many complaints range from hard to clean, great for ventilation but drafty, leaky etc. (but like with anything, this may be attributable to the quality rather than the louvres themselves) Choice of window should take into consideration architectural design, for instance casement windows look very good in a Tudor style home or in Mediterranean revival style. Sliding windows are popular for modern designs but look out of place in Victorian terraces. Awning windows are coming back in terms of popularity, and they have been combined with sliding windows/doors in a bay window setting or a sun room. Awnings will also give good ventilation when the sash is smaller, and some people have them stacked one on top of the other. If you like casements, go with the casements - the salesperson won't live there but you will! Sometimes its useful to stand in front of the glazed area and try to open (with your hands) and close an imaginary window? What does it feel like, will it be comfortable to open in or out? Do you use your right hand or left? Do you want a winder on awnings (if its awnings you want) or is that too slow for you? Do this exercise a few times to see what comes naturally. Its so hard to imagine what it will look like cos we have such a little house at the moment and never had to consider such big walls. I have been driving around and noticing the types of windows people have been putting on new homes and mostly they are sliding or double hung so I will stick with the sliders. The layout will be 700wall, 600fixed,2400slider,600 fixed, 700wall. I wish there was little extra wall to play with and I would put a 350 stud in between the two 600 fixed and sliders. Or Should i sacrifice some of the wall on either end and put those seperator studs in? or make the slider slightly smaller but then that reduces air flow even more?
