Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Sep 20, 2010 4:46 pm Is the architrave the bit that goes around the doorway? If so, the ensuite doorway to the master bedroom of a property we want to buy doesn't have any. The wall just goes right up to the ceiling with no skirting / architraves, etc. Do you NEED these in order to put certain doors on? Right now there are little swinging louvered saloon type doors. Would we need to get architraves / a proper doorway installed to put any other type of door on? How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Ensuite / Bedroom Doorway Has No Architraves 2Sep 20, 2010 5:15 pm Hi Grace, my wife and I looked at many new display homes from all the different builders and noticed that the common thing was to have no doors on the walk-in robes or ensuites. We didn't like the idea of having our clothes etc on show or having no privacy in the ensuite so we included cavity (sliding doors to both) in our plan. Cavity doors slide into the wall and do not require an architrave only the track to slide on. They also save room by not swinging into the room space. If you are buying an existing property you will need architraves put on and door jambs. cheers wayne Re: Ensuite / Bedroom Doorway Has No Architraves 3Sep 20, 2010 10:09 pm Well, architraves hide the join of the door jam to the wall. That, besides looking nice, is their main purpose, like cornice hides the wall/ceiling join and skirting board the floor/wall join. Yes, it can be done without architrave but as with no-cornice solutions, it is more fiddly to get a clean result. It may also look a bit strange if other doorways in the room have the usual architrave. Status: sold our first house, moved in with parents, bought our second in Pakenham, still planning to build in a few years time. Re: Ensuite / Bedroom Doorway Has No Architraves 4Sep 21, 2010 7:41 pm Cool, yeah, I very much agree it does look quite strange, not only not having architraves / door jams, etc, but because the "hole" (doorway) goes right up to the ceiling, with no wall coming down and then the architrave, etc. If we buy the property, we'll see what our options are. I like the idea of cavity sliding doors, but I don't know if that'd be way too expensive...normal sliding doors (non-cavity) are definitely out, as the ensuite is TINY and there's also no room for the door to slide anywhere in the bedroom either (not a small room, but we need the wall space for furniture, etc). And yeah, I don't care for the "new fangled" house designs with totally open WIRs and ensuites. I don't want my bath actually IN my bedroom, or to see my clothes all the time, or to have my clothes moist from the ensuite air, and so on... Oh, and I've also noticed, speaking of architraves and door jams etc hiding the joins and skirting boards and all that, a lot of places in QLD don't have skirting boards. This has always annoyed me. lol It looks messy without 'em I think. How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Take a pick with a level sittingo n the slab and a pick with a level sitting on the sill please. This will help us diagnose the issue and therefore a solution.
