We've got large full length glass sliding doors which currently have sunscreen blinds on them which we keep closed during the day for privacy but we're now thinking of getting that mirror-like tinting stuff to put on our glass doors instead, especially since we've been planning on replacing them with even larger stacker doors anyway. I haven't seen this done in any residential setting before, just office blocks. Anyone have this done or have had glass stacker/bifolds installed with this type of coating? Re: Anyone have privacy tinting on their windows/doors? 2Jul 15, 2010 7:42 pm We have had several of our windows tinted. The tint is not the super shiney mirror like tint but a dark, reflective surface, if that makes sense! Ours is a film that was put on after handover. This means we have complete privacy during the day. No-one can see in and we can still see out. I'm not a fan of obstructed views out the windows so didn't want sunscreen blinds or curtains. Here is a pic of our facade showing the tinted front windows. Order it with your new door, it will be cheaper, any tint will work, but they all work only during the day, because at night you can see anything through the tint if your room is lit. I also love your front doors. Just wondering how dark the tinted windows look from inside. Thanks. The windows look untinted from the inside. The tint doesn't darken a room, it just cuts glare and heat and creates privacy in the daylight. With the flash off Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ with the flash on. I'm really surprised at how much light the tint lets in. It looks fab. How much does tinting generally cost??? We have 7 large windows at the front of our house, which is north facing. We will have low-e glass (to comply with 5 star rating etc). I am wondering, if we get tinting, will this affect the low-e glass??? After reading this thread, I am starting to think that we could do what you did, FB, and just have window blockers at night and having the windows uncovered during the day. (great thread ) Re: Anyone have privacy tinting on their windows/doors? 10Jul 26, 2010 5:58 am Hi Rowena we had two bedroom windows tinted, a large sliding door, the large meals area window and the front 6 front windows tinted plus, obscure film for the front doors for a cost of $1100. This was very cheap compared to another company, from memory their quote was about $1600 so that gives you an idea of the cost. i'm not sure about the effects of the tinting on the low-e glass, Ed will know, maybe PM him. I love having all the blinds up and having nothing hanging in front of the windows during the day. I can sticky beak outside and no one knows!! There are currently problems with single glazed Low-E glass spontaneously cracking which is caused by different temperatures on each side of the glass, I am sure if you put film on the glass, and you have cracking, they will blame the film. I just went to a glass manufacture to look into tinting and she knew nothing about tinting that you could see out but not in! I was hoping to have a look at what options there are. My preference is to have it put on the glass prior to installation. The window is timber framed and double glazed and are not prefab. I know yours was after market but who did you use Fairy Blue and was there various levels of tinting? If so what was yours called? If anyone could steer me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated. I found the invoice (amazing!) and the type of tint used was Optima ULR 12. There are different types, he had a sample, and we just went with his recommendation. Check out this website for an explanation of different types. http://www.sungardballarat.com.au/p_filmFlat.html Re: Anyone have privacy tinting on their windows/doors? 17Aug 26, 2010 7:59 am Anyone know if you need council approval to do this? We have several large windows we'd like done. Re: Anyone have privacy tinting on their windows/doors? 18Aug 26, 2010 8:17 am It could depend on whether the windows are visible from the street or not - you can check your local DCP or call council. This is the second home we have had tinted. We have never gotten council approval and never even considered the need to. As stated above it would be best to check with your local council. Re: Anyone have privacy tinting on their windows/doors? 20Aug 26, 2010 10:56 pm If you are in NSW, The NSW State Government introduced State Environmental Planning Policy (Exempt and Complying Codes) in 2008. The policy provides exempt and complying development codes that have State-wide application. Exempt Development is defined as a work of minor nature, which does not require Council approval, provided it meets specific requirements (including non-structural alterations and some minor building work) The following is an excerpt from the legislation: Subdivision 27 Minor building alterations (external) 2.53 Specified development A minor external non-structural building alteration, such as the following: (a) painting, plastering, cement rendering, cladding, attaching fittings or decorative work, (b) the replacement of an external window, glazing areas or a door (other than those on bush fire prone land), (c) the repair to or replacement of a non-structural wall or roof cladding, (d) the installation of a security screen or grill to a door or window or a security door, is development specified for this code if it is not constructed or installed on or in, or in relation to, a heritage item or a draft heritage item or in a heritage conservation area or a draft heritage conservation area. 2.54 Development standards The standards specified for that development are that the development must: (a) not comprise the making of, or an alteration to the size of, any opening in a wall or roof, such as a doorway, window or skylight, and (b) not reduce the existing fire resistance level of a wall or roof, and (c) if located on bush fire prone land: (i) be adequately sealed or protected to prevent the entry of embers, and (ii) use equivalent or improved quality materials, and (d) not affect any existing fire resisting components of the building, and (e) not affect the means of egress from the building in an emergency, and (f) if it is the installation of a security screen or grill to a door or window or a security door—be for domestic purposes only. Note. See separate entry for skylights. End excerpt. If the above description does not conflict with your situation (eg heritage home), you do not have to lodge a council development application to change glass or replace windows. There was an amendment to the SEPP in 2009, (without change to Subdivision 27) so refer to the website: http://housingcode.planning.nsw.gov.au for more information.
