Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Aug 28, 2010 3:09 pm Hi We are having a slight problem with the door into our open plan lounge, kitchen from our entrance way. It is a door that will stay open 95% of the time. We have two options. Option 1- single cavity sliding door Am worried this might look a bit informal. If we did this would we be best to make it one with a timber framed glass one to dress it up a bit? It does give us the best use of space. Option 2- is a regular door that opens in to the lounge room swinging all the way back (180 deg) so that it rests on the wall (there is no corner near this door). The problem with this is the door will always be open and open right back to next to the tv entertainment unit. It may limit us in what units we can also buy. We don't want it to open into the entrance way as it will rest opposite the front door and that is what you will see every time you open the front door. Any opinons would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Donna Re: Would you make this a cavity sliding door? 2Aug 28, 2010 3:14 pm I'd go the hinged door, but I absolutely despise cavity sliders with a passion and would go to any length not to have one. Have you thought about a single bi-fold door? My cousin has them in her place in the door which is from the corridor to the lounge and works a treat! If it's going to be open 95% of the time why would you have a hinged door that will limit your use of the room??? I can't imagine how a slider door would make a room look informal, to me it would look a lot nicer to see the doorway with the door tucked neatly away in the wall than to see a door that's swung all the way open with a handle in the way and furniture positioned awkwardly around it. Re: Would you make this a cavity sliding door? 5Aug 28, 2010 4:13 pm I've got a cavity slider and I think it is great. Allows two rooms to be open into each other or separated and you can use the space to either side of the opening. What problems do people see with cavity sliders? Also with having pets inside, I hate that pet hair gets in the crack and then comes out with the door. The vacuum only goes in so far. Also, my pets can open cavity sliders which drives me crazy. I had them in a house when I was a kid, including as my bedroom door and I think it's scarred me. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. My tracks are in and the door will never come off the track. But I know what you mean, my mum's place has one that is constantly falling off the track - but she only has one criteria when buying anything - the cheapest. We are using Corinthian Doors with Oak wood and Art Deco glass . We will be using it as a study and small sitting room and like the idea of closing it off. A balanced diet is chocolate in both hands. We have a double into the kids' toy room - which is perfect as I can shut them and the mess away LOL or leave it wide open to keep a close eye on them. We also have one from the powder room to the laundry - which means less impact on both rooms as well as another from the laundry into the hallway - again less impact. I think that they are perfect for the odd occassions you want to close off a room and not have an actual door on show all the time. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Would you make this a cavity sliding door? 10Aug 29, 2010 8:26 pm Hi Thanks everyone for the responses. Looks like we will go the sliding door. It's not ideal but I think it makes the most sense. The upside is that you wont look directly at the open cavity as you walk in the front door. Unfortunately because of where the door is, it has to be a single cavity door (I think doubles would've looked a bit nicer) as there is no room for the cavity on the other side. French doors were considered but by the time you make the door way wider it would end up taking up as much space as a regular door and one of the doors would cover our light switches. Again with bifolds we would have to make the door way a bit wider (don't want to be dragging shopping bags etc through a narrow door) and then we would lose the straight line of the door being at the end of the hallway.
