Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Aug 18, 2010 2:29 pm Hi team.... I am wondering what kind of 'fly screens' (or alternatives) can be put onto French doors. We are looking at a property that has two lovely big french doors but if we want to have them open in summer/warm evenings, there is nothing stopping all the bugs from coming in. Does anyone know of any solution/options for french doors? Same with the windows - none of the windows have fly screens on them - can these easily be fitted to existing windows. And same question for the front door - there is no screen door - is it just a case of having one fitted or does it require alterations to the framework around the door potentially?? Thanks... We wanted our builders to install something like this, however they gave an excuse that they are not terribly robust and they fall apart to easily causing headaches for them in terms of builders warranty. We are planning on using them when we finish renovating. I rang the other day to get a price and they were about $800- per door. Supposed to be goo though and means you can safely have your doors open on a summer night Re: fly wire screens on windows & french doors - or alternat 6Aug 19, 2010 12:13 pm Flyscreens should be available from your window supplier - we are having A & L windows, I rang them and asked about Flyscreens and was told that when we are ready to move in, all we have to do is give them our address and they will have details of windows they supplied via builder and will make flyscreens to suit, they also do flydoors etc. Might be an option - and probably cheaper seeing as they have standard sizes. Appreciate it.... Ceebs Re: fly wire screens on windows & french doors - or alternat 8Sep 16, 2010 7:16 am the "roller" flyscreens have had a lot of headaches. I went to a building expo and asked one manufacturer about them as his seemed really sturdy and solid as apposed to some others around. His response was "my ones are better than a lot of others, but they are never going to be as good as the solid one piece sliders". Re: fly wire screens on windows & french doors - or alternat 9Sep 17, 2010 2:11 pm Hi Ceebs, It actually depends on your intention - do you want to keep the bugs out ... or intruders. If it is simply about keeping insects and bugs out, then you have two options: 1. Normal Flyscreen Doors - these can be made specifically for french doors to allow one door to open or both doors open at a time - this would be the cheapest option. 2. Retractable Flyscreens - these are more expensive, but look great as there are no bars or columns blocking the view. If you're more interested in security ... like wanting to keep the doors open in summer but stop intruders ... the best option is a security door with a clear view mesh. Again, these can be made specifically for french doors and provide an excellent view (with no bars or columns), yet are high grade strength for security. These are more costly, but last a life time. Oh, and flyscreens for the windows - that's an easy one. Any decent flyscreen company would be able to take care of that regardless of what kind of windows you have. I hope that helps.
