Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Aug 02, 2010 4:53 pm I refused to pay the upgrade to EB to provide us with a timber door. So it was to be a post-handover project . But at the time, I didn't think far enough ahead to realise that I would also need stained timber architraves & doorjambs All I was focussed on was the timber door Can I get away with a timber door & painted architraves ? I think it will ruin the look, or am I being anal ? What do you say ? Did that in our previous Edwardian home Seriously do not want to sand again Also, not sure if the architraves are MDF or pine - both of which would be unsuitable Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: Changing Our Painted Entry Door to Stained Timber 4Aug 02, 2010 5:28 pm Sorry Southies, I don't think it would look very nice at all. The door you have looks great as it is though. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Changing Our Painted Entry Door to Stained Timber 5Aug 02, 2010 5:59 pm Jo, I agree it looks OK but I soooo wanted a timber door - just to give the facade a bit of a lift. Also, the door is 'lost' because it's so set back and we have too much taupe/brown, IMO. See how the timber 'lifts' the mood to a rendered facade : (Sorry to anyone whose pics I might have pinched - I've had them saved for ages) Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Now compare those pics to my front facade : Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: Changing Our Painted Entry Door to Stained Timber 8Aug 02, 2010 10:33 pm Southies - I had exactly the same question, and my house isn't finished yet. I really wanted stained door but listened to you-know-who....and dammit I want my stained door . I hear you Unfortunately though, I can't see another way around changing everything.... House isn't finished yet, but the painters were there last week. I don't have an updated pic of the paint job though. Will get a pic when I next go up there for you Oceanic with Nautilus upgrades. Thanks Bek, yes it's great but you know what it's like when something is 2nd choice...... Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: Changing Our Painted Entry Door to Stained Timber 14Aug 03, 2010 8:26 am We have double timber doors and the surrounds are painted the same colour as the render, don't know if you can a get very close match to your bricks but that would be my suggestion. Just had another look at the top photo, why not paint it the same as the wall on the right!!! At least it will tie in with it and look like it was meant to be that way. Take that back you have brickwork around the door??? no bagging??? go back to a close match to the bricks Re: Changing Our Painted Entry Door to Stained Timber 16Aug 03, 2010 9:07 am I am sorry to disappoint you Southies, but like bek, I love your colours exactly as they are. They are so calming and sit perfectly together, and each in their location on the house. If you are really really set on changing this, maybe you could wait a little until the doors are closer to needing refreshing and then do it? In that case, I'd repalce the whole lot with full timber (including frames and trims), if it's possible (and I'm sure it would be) and then staining it to your liking. Otherwise, you'd be having a half * solution and that would bother me more than the whole lot being painted as it is (in these beautiful muted colours, if I may add ). Re: Changing Our Painted Entry Door to Stained Timber 17Aug 03, 2010 5:12 pm I agree with the others that you'd have to have the architrave etc the same. I would try & find out from the builder or someone if it's MDF first, though. You don't want to strip it & then have to replace it anyway. If it's pine you could probably stain it to match OK. I know what you mean about 'settling' for something when you really have it in your heart to look a certain way, but the door colour does look good as is. (I'm trying to make you feel better because as nice as it is, I love the look of timber doors, too...) Like a glossy black or maroon/dark red? ETA dare I say even a dark brown, not mission brown though, of course Or even a deep plum? ~*~Moved in on the 16th April 2011~*~ Re: Changing Our Painted Entry Door to Stained Timber 20Aug 03, 2010 5:33 pm Whilst I prefer the timber, if you haven't got hardwood architraves etc will be a difficult and expensive look to achieve.
