Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Jul 25, 2010 8:46 pm Hi, We need two cavity sliding doors installed. One will be installed into an existing door frame while the other will be a new opening into the currently external laundry. How much should I expect to pay to have this work done? I have been quoted the following: Supply & fit two new cavity sliders. Create opening. Structural work will be required. Total including GST $3,696 Bearing in mind this is just one small component of the work we are intending to have done, this seems very expensive to me. What sort of structural work is required? I am in Sydney. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Mark Re: Cost of installing Cavity Doors 2Jul 26, 2010 12:53 am We looked into this a while ago and Eurocav came up as a good option - sleek design and hidden casing, goes full height. Note that name is from memory but it is something like that anyway. Essentially need to replace the brick wall with the casing and that is then plastered over. Definitely seemed expensive to us and we decided against it but loved the look - from memory was about $1800 for an opening of approx 1500mm floor to ceiling. Re: Cost of installing Cavity Doors 3Jul 26, 2010 5:36 pm I would perceive that the structural work involved will be required because the walls are load bearing ie they are supporting what ever is above those walls where the doors are going and needed perhaps because of something to do with the roof or a second story above. If you can get into your ceiling area can you see what is there? Thus there may be some considerable work involved to place the structural items in place to support the load. If the walls are not load bearing then such work is not required other than a header beam immediately above the new cavity door which would be no more than framing timber. I would hope that the quote hasn't been gilded with the word structural if this simple header beam is all that is required. If this is the case then I would regard the quote price as excessive. Regardless, I think I would be getting some more quotes. Re: Cost of installing Cavity Doors 4Aug 02, 2010 4:58 pm WOW!! That seems expensive. But as the previous poster said may be the structural work. Where in Sydney are you? My brother in-law is a builder and does things like that. He's at Kellyville. 2 2526 Hey guys, what’s everyone opinion on James Hardie linea direct fix to frame? Would this be the most common method and anybody ever had any problems down the track? 0 5151 Firstly, if your house is still under builder's warranty (10 years in Victoria) you should have no need to crawl into roof space but let the builder handle it, unless you… 3 5640 |
