Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Jul 13, 2010 11:43 am Hi all I was wondering if anyone had done their research on plantation shutters and whether the big difference in price was really worth it for PVC or brasswood plantation shutters? The PVC ones come framed whereas the better ones attach to your actual architrave. I called one company who said their PVC product is at the better end of the market. I need about 7-8 windows covered (one is really big, the others those skinny modern ones), and was quoted $3,500 for cheapies, and $4,800 for the expensive ones. So i'd be really interested to hear any advice out there. Also with the framed plantation shutters - I suppose it would be hard to clean your window more as they are fixed, or does that not really matter? I noticed in the Masterton display home they had tiny frames (but I didnt notice it until I closely observed..) Also this company told me for a flat fee of $250 they would finish the shutters in the same paint as my architrave so that it matched. That seems really great service to me but again, I welcome any advice/information. Thanks guys. 1st Tender - 20 March 2010 Slab - 14 August 2010 Frames - 31 August 2010 Roof - 11 September 2010 Bricks finished - 2 October 2010 Lock up - 15 October 2010 Keys - 10 December 2010!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=41002 Re: Plantation Shutters - PVC or Hardwood/Brasswood? 2Jul 13, 2010 12:06 pm Hi BZMZ, I have ordered a mix of custom craft (Polyurethane coated HDF) and ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) for 17 windows in my home. They both look exactly the same, and I'm unsure what you mean by 'framed'. They are attached to the architraves on hinges that can be opened so you can get to your windows to clean them and open them. I used mostly the custom craft ones because they were cheaper, but they can only do a max of 750 width per shutter due to the weight of them. I used the ABS in the wet areas and if I wanted less panels for a large window....which I had to do for the bi-fold in the lounge. No photos, as they get installed tomorrow! I'll move this to the windows section too! Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! How exciting to actually have them installed, I think it will change the interior look dramatically, what colour are you getting? Site Start: 10th September, 2010 PCI : Friday 27th January, 2011. It's the most exciting thing to happen to the house since the deck was finished 3 months ago, so I'm very excited! I have a fairly traditional style home and the shutters will all be white. LOVE the look, and can't wait to get rid of the paper redi shades! I will also have a bi-fold in the meals area as well. Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! Can't wait to see your pictures! Sounds lovely! 1st Tender - 20 March 2010 Slab - 14 August 2010 Frames - 31 August 2010 Roof - 11 September 2010 Bricks finished - 2 October 2010 Lock up - 15 October 2010 Keys - 10 December 2010!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Here are the bi-folds, and the rest of the pics will be in my build thread which is below in my sig! There is no difference in style/look (except for the cross bar), just the weight of the product, so the lounge room ones would have required 6 panels if I went with the HDF. If you would like any close-ups of how they work/are installed, please let me know! Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! I used Timbershades: http://www.timbershades.com.au/index.html For 17 windows (various sizes and 2 different products) cost just under $10K. There service was fabulous. I dropped off my plans with a general "This is what I want", received a phonecall the next day with an estimate, then an at home free measure and quote, followed by a check measure once I gave the go ahead, and install today. And also love your paint colour ... what is that called?? 17 windows, $10K. Paint colour is 'Nomadic Ivory' by Bristol...full strength. Similar to Dulux 'Hogs Bristle' but ever so slightly warmer (not as green when the 2 are put side by side!) upsydaisy Thanks Stormy. I couldn't really visualise what they might look like when reading other threads, so to see a real house where they look so good was very helpful. Thanks for sharing! No probs, Upsydaisy! There are various different ways to make them, though. Mine are the smaller 64mm eliptical blades, and the operating bar is in the middle (which I love), you can get them on the sides, or none at all. I also chose to have the cross bar on the majority of them as well, as I love that look too, and you can do them without it if you like! Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!!
