However when we included it in our current plans, the ratios are all out and now with the frame up, it's clearly evident something has to change. The AV setup won't be too elabroate but enough to watch movies with the volume slightly up. We still have a few days in which to finalise our next step so the question is; a) Do we cover the whole thing up? b) Do we reduce the oversall size? c) Do we possibly remove the whole thing and install cavity doors? (probably too late now) d) Go with a combination of reducing the size and dressing the void up with retractable blinds, shutters etc so we can have the best of both worlds? The front of the house faces west so natural light isn't an issue in this area. Also, if you have any suggestions for the main opening in the media room please let me know. Re: Media room vs Family/dining vs open plan 2Jun 28, 2010 1:31 pm Is that a wall that separates the media room to the dining? I'd be more inclined to close it up so that you can watch movies with a bit of volume in darkness. I do like the idea of the cut-out and understand why visually it would look better. I guess if that's a wall that separates the media room to the dining then the cut-out feature will still provide privacy and also help to reduce noise levels. Good place also to put any dvds etc there too. Re: Media room vs Family/dining vs open plan 4Jun 28, 2010 2:51 pm we have a similar setup. We used 2 x 870 solid cavity sliding for the wall between the kitchen/dining and lounge/media room. With the doors open, there's a nice bit opening to give the feeling of one big room. But when you want to wtch movies or some quiet.. you can close the doors off. Re: Media room vs Family/dining vs open plan 5Jun 28, 2010 5:18 pm relliksalta we have a similar setup. I actually just gave the builder the go ahead to close it all in but would be really interested in hearing how much noise it prevented? My understanding that cavitities would dampen the noise with a fixed wall obviously reducing the sound transfer. Also appreciate your feedback thus far, I'm glad you can understand the pros and cons associated with taking it either direction. Upon looking at the plan further, I've asked for the media room entrance to be brought in a little so we have the option of a sliding door in the future. In it's current state, it looks as though it will be about 600mm short! Re: Media room vs Family/dining vs open plan 7Jul 01, 2010 10:16 pm So technically people in the dining area can see into the media room and vice versa? Re: Media room vs Family/dining vs open plan 8Jul 01, 2010 10:29 pm Good move changing the opening of the doors. The opportunity to be able to close off a home theatre/media room is important I think. I will still need to get a door installed after handover to enclose our rumpus room/home theatre, but if it means i can watch something while I'm cooking while children or husband is watching something else with loud sound in the theatre then it is worth it. Is it too late for you to install some sound insulation to the theatre rooom. We have soundcheck plasterboard to the bedroom adjoining the theatre, the other walls to the theatre are external walls anyway. Re: Media room vs Family/dining vs open plan 9Jul 04, 2010 9:05 pm I observe your media room has a tiled floor finish. Doubt if this would be the best floor treatment for such a room. Hard surfaces reflect sound - I would think a carpet covering would much improve the acoustics. cheers Re: Media room vs Family/dining vs open plan 10Jul 08, 2010 11:45 pm I'm actually just waiting on some quotes for the soundproofing options. Might just go for another level of plasterboard if it's too much extra. The floors throughout the house will be timber, contrary to what is on the plan. he builder has assured me that they know what to put down though I'll be looking for a nice big rug down the track to improve the acoustics.
