Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 May 16, 2010 5:18 pm Hi all I wanted to know what other builders are charging to upgrade to double glazed window? We are in preliminary stages of negotiation and have been quoted over $15000 to upgrade to basic A&L aluminum window (roughly 10 largish window, 18 narrow window ). The reason I ask is that when we queried a dark spot in the upstairs rumpus (an area of 4 x 6 m) it was suggested that we put in a skylight. The builder then ‘ “recommend” we put in 4!!! skylights . ( 1140mm x 1180mmVelux VS0074 606 manual openable skylights at a cost of – hold on to your hats - : $15250. 4x 6 isn’t a vast area and single sky tube would be more than sufficient to lighten up this area (I received an external quote for a solar tube of $1200 complete). Hence why I am questioning the double glazed window quote. With the new 6 star compliance starting next year I hope builders are not unnecessarily inflating costs for items that are required (and needed especially in cold Melbourne). Your feedback would be greatly appreciated. Don't give them your plans, don't mention your builder. Your price will be higher than your builder's price, but the difference between single and double should tell you everything you want to know. The builder can only add 25% mark up. Or come and see me Ed "ECOECO" At 'EcoEco', we design windows, we design the best windows, we do it for you, so that when you’re happy we are happy.
