Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Apr 25, 2010 9:31 pm Dear all, I live in Adelaide in a two storey, rectangular home built on a slope. Entry is made via the east side of the house into the top floor. It is an open plan house and you walk direct into the lounge/kitchen area. Three bedrooms on the top floor (on the north and south ends of the longer side of the rectangle). Rumpus/laundry/fourth bedroom on ground floor. The main reason we fell in love with the house is also the main problem of the house!!!!! To explain, both east and west sides of the house on the top floor are basically made of glass in addition to the west side of the ground floor. Floor to ceiling glass. The western side of the top floor consists of glass panels measuring 142cm x 94 cm on top of panels measuring 88 x 94. We have a 6cm wooden batten in between the windows. There is a stairway on the western side of the house leading downstairs which is made of panels measuring 188 x 94. The join at the top of these panels are also direct to glass above (which then meet the roof) As I said - glass everywhere. Perfect views of a reserve behind us and down to the sea from every room. BUT.......as you have now all guessed, it get's bloody cold during the winter months (ditto v hot during summer). It is all single pane. We never want to move but are trying to find cost effective ways to minimise the number of jumpers worn during July and August. One for the experts I believe....you will gain a friend for life. Re: Too many windows, advice needed 3Apr 25, 2010 9:47 pm At the moment we only have the vertical (hanging) blinds which we hardly ever open - defeats the object of the house really. When pulled, they do affect the summer temperature but obviously do nothing for the winter. We can cope with the summer (good old A/C) but the winter is a real bind. We are willing to take out a slice of equity from the house to make it more bearable....if it can be achieved. (maybe reduce by 2/3 depends what you have now) Hot in the sun - add Low-E glass to the North and West. about 80% reduction in heat.
