Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Apr 07, 2010 9:07 pm There is an Australian Standard 2047 that is madatory for all windows going into Australian homes. Unfortunately anything ISO, EU , EN just doesnt cut the mustard. The only reason for this is that the water component part of this test is conducted for 15 minutes in Australia and only 5 in Europe. So technically any window used in a home has to meet these standards and one has to be able to provide certification of compliancy. Having found this out I felt completely and utterly defeated as all in by importing these windows I would be saving AT LEAST 25 thousand dollars. I then decided to ring testing plants ... these are limited to the Eastern States and therefore mean windows would have to be tested there. In addition to this I was told by one outfit that we would be required to book the testing plant at two thousand dollars a day and two hundred and fifty per compliance certificate. Boy I was p$%%£"! However I rang the last man on my list who was ever so helpful. He confirmed that my information was correct but was so completely helpful. He said in our shoes he would stick the windows in! He also said that he was coming to Perth for three weeks in three weeks and would be very happy to test a window at the cost of half a day. A new enthusiasm was borne! So now I have two choices. Hurry up and get a window made and couriered here to get the certification or just get one shipped straight to Sydney to be tested. The window is going to cost a max of 1k and I am not sure what shipping will cost. Testing will cost 1k so for a bit of faffing I could get certification. My feeling is that it is worth it ... but would really appreciate others thoughts. The nearest quote we have had doesnt include shipping for over east, is double glazing in aluminium and doesnt include fly screens and it is 6k more for their standard sizes. Our Crazy Owner Builder Journey! Re: AS standards and windows 4Apr 07, 2010 10:30 pm The difficulty ****** in the AS standard and there are only a few in Australia! I will have a look into what the unis test as it may be useful for future reference. Thanks! Re: AS standards and windows 5Apr 08, 2010 8:35 am Hmmm, yes, you are right. I think it unlikely that your windows tested overseas will pass Australian tests for water first time. I guess with a tweak to seals etc they will eventually pass, but that increases the cost at each test. And you must test every component in each product (transom, mullion, doors etc.) at the maximum size used and to the terrain category that you require. So that's a special product or a number of products. Added to that, how can you get a warranty on the products? What about flyscreens, overseas products don't cater for them? What about the finish, will it survive our UV? I ask because we have done all that, and it cost heaps in terms of time and money. All that said and done, maybe your inspection won't ask for the "glazing certificate" so you could take a chance. Finally, there's the risk involved in freight, it took us 12 months to perfect freight, before that we had one container 70% destroyed. Now it's plain sailing. My suggestion is buy from EcoClassic & pick them up yourself. We will give you replacement parts but no onsite warranty for WA... but at least we are available here, and we have integrated flyscreens and they are designed here, tested to N4 and the best rated for energy in WERS. He obviously already has the systems in place and if he knows he's going up against your quote which is 25k less than everyone else, I'm sure he'll be on his best behavior and quote accordingly. He wants to win the job after all? I'm all for saving cash but it depends on the risk vs saving. The windows come with fly screens so that is not a problem. The company is also very familiar with shipping internationally as Australia is one of the only markets they havent gotten into - for obvious reasons! The warranty we would get from Poland is the same as yours! They will replace parts etc and from what I can see shipping across the Nullabor is on a par with shipping from Europe! The testing bit is the issue and I have had long conversations with the testing organisation. Our decision to move forward will depend on their response to the most recent email. Finally Ed I have sent you our winodw list and whilst I was impressed with your cost as it was a realtivley competitive option (still more expensive mind!) however upon closer inspection I find that the window dimensions are not as requested and has been quoted in aluminium. I have been told that to make our specific size will cost an additional 30% as will UPVC thus adding 60% to your original quote. Then add shipping and we may as well get them made here in Perth! What I find so frustrating is that whilst I appreciate these standards are there to protect consumers Australia HAS to stop playing so arrogant and recognise that other countries testings standards are as good, if not superior to our own here. To change the subject but to effectively illustrate the point we used isofix car seats in EU - I wouldnt use any other. We are lucky enough to drive a car here that allows us to still do so. However these seats do not meet Australian standards and the Australian standards for car seat safety and children is FAR inferior to our friends in EU. I fear the same may be said for windows. Unfortunately, or fortunately - depending which side of the fence you are on, the Australian window standards are based on the USA and European standards, but in the case of water penetration are actually more stringent here... Don't think they are designed for double brick. WA has a particular way of building and unfortunately that's the way a large amount of sills are finished. 3 7012 I believe this is correct.
