I guess what i can add on to some of our friends suggestions, if your problem is heat from sun then use awnings especially on your east and west facing window atleast to block the rays of the sun. With this you can open your windows without having the rays of the sun coming inside your home plus you can get fresh air from the outside. Blinds are better to use in warm weather than curtains and i think if you use too thick draperies it would cause more heat inside the house.
