Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Mar 01, 2010 12:03 am I am considering building a Metricon Chelsea 37. The family/kitchen/Dining room at the showhome has two huge wooden bifold doors in an 'L' shape. one 4 panel which meets a 5 panel. There is no pillar/post in the corner and when both are open it looks fantastic as the whole space is open to the garden. My hubby is convinced they will be a nightmare for drafts in winter coming through the bottom bit where the sliders are and wonders if they will rattle in a high wind!!! Has anyone had these type doors and if so, any problems with drafts or any other advice good/bad?? Thanks Re: Very wide wooden bifolds - 'L' shaped, any draft problems? 2Mar 01, 2010 4:37 pm Is this similar to what you are getting? Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ We live in a very windy area and at the moment have no back fence...so it's bearing full brunt of the wind and am happy to report....no rattling and no drafts. My advice.....yes...i have a few... 1. Think about keys and accessing from the outside. My 3 panel bifold has a door and locks...so that's good...can open from outside or inside. But the 4 panel is just purely bifold...so can't be accessed from outside. 2. Yes, the bifolds are beautiful when they are open. That's what made us fall in love with them. But think about fly screens. I haven't priced it but I have read a lot of threads here with people pricing fly screens for bifolds. 3. Window coverings.....think about what kind of window dressings you would use. Having no gap between the bifolds is beautiful....but harder to install blinds etc. As it is...we have no room for drapes and our current dressings of jamaican blinds over e-screen rollers is not working. The jamaicans keep getting holes where they rub against the e-screen roller bracket. All the best and I hope I haven't put your off bi-folds. Re: Very wide wooden bifolds - 'L' shaped, any draft problem 4Mar 02, 2010 6:44 am No drafts .....no rattling ..... I LOVE my doors! Ours have extremely good seals and drafts just aren't an issue. It's extremely windy here, and the only rattling we get is from our garage door and fences. We have two sets - one is a three-leaf and one a four-leaf - but unlike overwhelmed, we got a hinged door at one end of each set (thank goodness). We also don't have flyscreens and haven't needed them. Whether or not you want them might depend on where you live and what kind of feral flying critters you have. Re: Very wide wooden bifolds - 'L' shaped, any draft problem 5Mar 02, 2010 3:26 pm Thanks so much guys. Very good point about the window coverings. Though I am hoping that the 6m alfresco roof will stop any glare from sunlight. Yes, one set is I think 5 panels and has no door and the other set of 4 has a door which has a lock etc. So the access door is right at the inside corner where the two bifolds meet. We dont suffer too bad with flies. More so mozzies in the evening. We have had the automatic mortein squirties this summer and they are brilliant for flies and mozzies that sneak into the house! They are very similar to photo but without the pillar in the middle. They literally meet each other to close. Re: Very wide wooden bifolds - 'L' shaped, any draft problem 7Mar 02, 2010 10:11 pm hahaha Well ours are facing our back garden which is really private and not overlooked at all, albeit drastically reduced by this huge monster of a single storey, but nonetheless we still have a bit of outside space. Now, just trying to come up with an inventive design for a pool to replace the one we are going to have to fill in!! - something my hubby is 'not impressed' about!! Thanks for all your comments, this site is so helpful... Im not Nobody can see into our alfresco room and I'm always out there in my pjs, so who cares if we still don't have blinds on the bifolds? We also have clear glass in and around our front door, so if people want to stand on the footpath and look at me walking by in my pjs, they can go right ahead. But why would they? Freaks.....
