Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Feb 08, 2010 9:43 pm We have our final inspection in two days time and in preparing for this, I would like to know whether anyone knows if the metal lintels that our builder has used over windows and our bifold doors should have been left unpainted. The lintel over the bifold door even has the product information which is printed on it very visible. It looks ugly next to the stained wood that we paid so much to have. Can anyone remember if H3nley's display homes leave the lintel unpainted? Those that have H3nley homes, are your lintels unfinished metal? Are their any regulations about this? Do I need to worry about the metal rusting as it is not protected? Re: Should lintels be painted? 2Feb 08, 2010 9:52 pm The metal won't rust as lintels are galvanised. I'm going for unpainted lintels since I like the look and once you start painting them, you have to keep doing it. I don't like the look of the writing that is visible above the bifold doors; do you have any writing visible on your lintels, Casa2? Re: Should lintels be painted? 5Feb 08, 2010 10:32 pm Hi onc_artisan, Are you suggesting that I should check if the metal used for my lintels really are galvanised as galvanised ones won't have printing on them? Or that they should have used non-galvanised metal so that I don't have the printing. I'm out of my depth with this one! Re: Should lintels be painted? 7Feb 08, 2010 10:42 pm They are, now I'm revealing my ignorance of things metal, an unfinished metal colour: it just looks like unfinished metal. Does that help at all? Otherwise I'll take a photo and post that. Re: Should lintels be painted? 9Feb 08, 2010 10:58 pm I'll take a photo tomorrow and have it up tomorrow evening. Sorry that I can't describe well enough... I didn't enjoy metal work at school, so probably didn't learn enough. The b* of a metal teacher once grabbed the handle of a metal guillotine and swung it in an arc around himself as he felt we were all standing too close to him when watching him demonstrate. My best friend at the time was narrowly missed by that swinging piece of metal and I never felt comfortable in that class again. Dropped it as soon as I could! Re: Should lintels be painted? 10Feb 08, 2010 11:00 pm Did we go to the same school? Tomorrow is fine Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Re: Should lintels be painted? 12Feb 09, 2010 6:53 am Exactly what Ari said! If you have built with Henley, all lintels except where they abutt render are to be left unpainted. I asked my SS about it and he said they remain 'naked'. They are galvanised and so will not rust, and he did mention that once they are painted they need repainting every couple of years (aparently). I even went to the Henley displays to check....and all their lintels are unpainted where it is up against brickwork. Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! I guess if I didn't notice this in the display houses, then others won't notice it in ours. Interesting what you see when you are preparing for the handover inspection that otherwise escapes detection! Just the wrong time for my work computer to develop problems! At least I have a notebook to allow access to H1! Re: Should lintels be painted? 15Feb 09, 2010 7:02 pm Fiffaro Thank you for putting my mind to rest about the rusting. I don't like the look of the writing that is visible above the bifold doors; do you have any writing visible on your lintels, Casa2? Some have some writing stamped into them. Most look plain. When you say writing, is it hand written or machine generated? Is it writing, or stamped into the metal? Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 Re: Should lintels be painted? 16Feb 09, 2010 9:23 pm Ari, yes, ours is Wednesday - tomorrow. It is all a little anti-climactic at the moment, particularly as I've spent so much of the day working on my computer. I'm just about to settle down and read through what others have written about their experience. Good luck on Thursday! Casa2, it is machine writing, not sure if it is stamped, but I'll have a look tomorrow. It looks like the manufacturer's identification, like the writing on the cable that is used for network wiring. onc_artisan, the best laid plans were defeated by my work computer going down, so I didn't even get to the house to take the photo. At least I have got it working again, having replaced the power supply, but the power supply has taken one hard drive out, and restoring the data will take me until the morning. Re: Should lintels be painted? 18Feb 12, 2010 7:09 am Okay I guess. The house is pretty good on the whole but there will be quite a bit of sanding and repainting done after handover. We'll see what the building inspectors report says today, in particular regarding the sandy mortar Re: Should lintels be painted? 19Feb 12, 2010 7:11 am onc-artisan, it has taken ages to fix the hard drive problem. Each read from the RAID 0 that had metadata scrambled by the failing power supply the raid reconstruction utility took 10 hours, give or take, and I made an image first before cloning onto a single drive. We were most of the way through, yesterday, when the storm struck and we lost power long enough for the computer to crash. As I was using my son's computer, it wasn't on my UPS. GRRR! Start the 10 hours again. However, I'm now back up on my work computer with all my data intact (I had a full clone from about 3 weeks ago which would have limited the damage) and I've received an email to say that my back up tapes from the USA are being shipped. I bought a tape drive in December (so I could claim the small business extra 50% tax break) but it had only been released in November and there were no tapes in Australia! In the new house, settlement next week, I'll set it all up so I clone the drives once a month and have tape backup working automatically between clones and have all the really important files backed up each day to a server. A few other little back up procedures should make all relatively safe. All that to say I haven't taken photos yet, but really appreciate your willingness to help. We'll see what the building inspectors report says today, in particular regarding the sandy mortar Did they give you a settlement date? Our guy seemed to take some delight in saying that we could have had settlement by Friday (today) had we not had an independent inspector involved. It looks like they have agreed to do what you think needs to be done, although it must be so frustrating to be this close and still have to wait for something that could have been done correctly first off.
