Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Feb 02, 2010 5:54 pm Hi, we are looking to put some new doors out to our main balcony. At the moment it is wood frame and glass floor to ceiling. I've got a plan as it currently stands but can't seem to attach atm.
The space is 3660mm wide and 2550 high, currently has two glass doors opening on the left side, both 900mm, and two fixed panes on the right, both 900 also. There is also a short window at the top of each frame, about 500mm high, so the doors at the moment are around 2050 high. I'd love in a perfect world to have bifolds, with 4 x 900 (2100 high) doors opening inwards so they all went against the right wall as you look out the opening. Reason they need to open inward is because of a water feature on the balcony. Can you even have bifolds that open inwards? We are across the road from the beach but on the sheltered side of the building. As an alternative to bifolds we were also thinking sliding glass. Ideally 4 doors that stack back to the width of 1 on the right hand side. We'd really like to maximize the opening. Is keeping the 500mm windows at the top going to be cheaper or dearer than just doing floor to ceiling doors? Anyone have any ideas from past experience as to which way is going to be the best mix of not spending a mega fortune and still giving us maximum space with a modern kinda look? THanks. Re: Balcony opening..Sliding or bifold? 4Feb 03, 2010 7:35 am Hi, thanks for the replies. Homeone, we don't really have many mossies. At the moment we have the double opening doors on the left and they are pretty much always open from spring to autumn without screens. Maybe a couple of nights a year when it's really hot we get a few but nothing to worry about. Jodge, I get where you are coming from. I've seen some stacker sliding doors in a configuration of 3 doors that stack back to one and it seems pretty reasonable cost wise, but I'd really prefer to have 4 doors so when they are stacked back and open you only have the 900 wide panel on the right side closed, rahter than a fixed panel of around 1200. Has anyone got any recommendations on who is good for this sort of thing in Melbourne? I've Googled and found a few, Stegbar, Nuline, etc. Emailed Stegbar a few weeks ago and haven't gotten a reply. Cheers. Re: Balcony opening..Sliding or bifold? 5Feb 03, 2010 7:45 am Hi led. . . Ive found that sales people tend to ignore emails (probably due to so many people just emailing stacks of suppliers to try and get the best price for something). You may have to call the company, or even go into their showroom and talk to a sales person to get any joy. Re: Balcony opening..Sliding or bifold? 7Feb 03, 2010 9:12 am I think so led! Annoying when they can't even answer your email, but understandable at the same time. You should put up a thread asking for good smaller door companies in your local area too, I would imagine that some of the bigger organisations would be more interested in making all their standard sizes and shipping them out rather than dealing with an order for one custom door. For instance, our builder goes through a one-man band for his screen doors, we've heard around that this guy is excellent and at a reasonable cost . . . maybe you can find a smaller door-co that will give you good personal service, and maybe some good advice? Re: Balcony opening..Sliding or bifold? 9Feb 03, 2010 1:39 pm Hi led. . . it's a common question. .. you can't actually post pics to this site, you have to post them somewhere like photobucket then add a link to the image inside the "image" brackets. . . but you already seem to have got the hang of that! That's a nice big window area. Our stacka doors come in either 2100mm height or 2400mm. .. are you after having a row of window panels above the doors, or having 2.55m high doors? Re: Balcony opening..Sliding or bifold? 10Feb 03, 2010 4:41 pm Hi Jodge, kinda depends on how the costs of each work out. I think floor to ceiling would be better than shorter doors and a window. The doors would be 2400 - 2500 plus a lintel of some sort. Plus if I could get 4 stackers it gives me a pretty good depth to fit tracks, around 270mm. Any idea if one way would be much cheaper than the other? Thanks edit : Actually allowing for the step up and the frame, 2400 would be just about right. First time building 2 storey home in NSW.
