Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Oct 26, 2009 3:26 pm Hi all just a question to all who have awning windows or chose sliders instead, Why?? I am looking at the awning style for the front two rooms and was wondering whether to continue for the back rooms and bathrooms. I currently have sliding windows and just want some opinions on both. Thankyou Re: Awning Windows versus Sliding Windows???? 2Oct 26, 2009 3:34 pm There have previously been some threads on this very subject, rhoff. Myself, I much prefer sliding windows and have them throughout my house, I like the stream lined appearance of them, they dont protrude when opened. no hazard when walking along path, for example, easier to put outside shutters on, better ventiliation when opened. The tall narrow windows in sets of 3 is a popular look here, so they tend to do awning windows on the front for them. Other than appearance,I forget what other peoples' preferences for awnings were based on. Re: Awning Windows versus Sliding Windows???? 4Oct 26, 2009 3:43 pm Wouldn't sliding windows also allow for better air flow ? Re: Awning Windows versus Sliding Windows???? 5Oct 26, 2009 4:21 pm I personally find that awning windows look much better however, they seem to me to have a worse air-allowance comparing to sliding windows, as well as I do not see that putting a mosquito net is easy with awnings. I should say that I never lived in a house having awning windows, so my considerations are highly theoretical. So, for my house I solved the dilemma between look and functionality by having awning windows to my facade sides (I have to) while putting sliding to the remaining two sides. Looks nice on the plans and will update with actual photos when windows have been installed. ... built a Promenade with Clarendon. viewtopic.php?f=31&t=25104 20-10-09 - excavation and piering completed ... 12-04-10 - Basins fixed. Re: Awning Windows versus Sliding Windows???? 6Oct 26, 2009 5:11 pm Our house will be all awining windows... why... because that's how the architect did it lol. No, we had them on the front of our last house and I love the look of them and also to me, they just feel more secure (as in, can't climb through and kids can't climb out lol) We had flyscreens on ours, they were just on the inside instead of the outside. Re: Awning Windows versus Sliding Windows???? 7Oct 26, 2009 6:57 pm We did mainly awning. the other great thing about them is that you can have them open when it is raining and still get some airflow. We went Wideline Paragon, these provide a very strong window, and a great mechanism for opening the windows that works very smoothly and quickly. Dan Re: Awning Windows versus Sliding Windows???? 8Oct 26, 2009 10:12 pm I see 2 advantages of awning windows - they can be left open and be less likely to let rain in; and secondly they are better at insulating sound from getting in or out (when shut). Flywire has to go on the inside of an awning window. I think sliding would be cheaper and allow better air flow and there is no winding mechanism to go wrong. Re: Awning Windows versus Sliding Windows???? 9Oct 27, 2009 5:25 am IMO awnings are best. They look better (especially with the fly screen on the inside), perform better in wind and rain and are more secure. You would use sliders when you don't want the open sash to protrude and when you want to save money, as they use the least amount of aluminium and the cheapest hardware. Project builders use them to save money. Ed "ECOECO" At 'EcoEco', we design windows, we design the best windows, we do it for you, so that when you’re happy we are happy. Tel. 1800 326 326 Re: Awning Windows versus Sliding Windows???? 10Oct 27, 2009 8:01 am I have awning windows on the facade and desperately wish that they were all around. All my sliding windows are letting huge amounts of dirt in and some are leaking to the point where it is overflowing the channel and onto the sill and then the carpet. B.....'s are coming out today to look at them so I will let you know what the outcome of that is. A previous house I had quite some years ago had awning windows all round and I still got good airflow through there. If I built again I would definitely go for awning as I didn't realise how bad the sliding windows are these days. Re: Awning Windows versus Sliding Windows???? 11Oct 27, 2009 11:26 am Thanks for all your replies klscomps I agree with you about the sliders letting alot of dust in, this is what we have at the moment and I hate how there is soo much dust. Where we are going to build is probably going to have more dust. Still trying to weigh up all the options though. Just don't want to be dissappointed with either. At this stage I am thinking I will go all awning along the front and then sliders everywhere else as I want quite large window in all the rooms. We shall see how long that decision lasts before I change my mind again Re: Awning Windows versus Sliding Windows???? 12Oct 27, 2009 11:55 am after that kid falling out of the windows accident in Sydney (http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009 ... 722609.htm), I think awning windows would certainly be more secure & safe compared to the sliding one for large windows. so many builders trying to cut cost by putting bigger windows everywhere as it's much cheaper than bricks. I have seen newly completed houses with huge upper stair windows opening at a dangerously low level which is lower than an adult's waist level. If any one is not careful while leaning/standing near the windows, he/she can easily fall out of the window. If there's any soft/coach/chair/boxes near the windows, it's even more dangerous for kids... That's why for our house, we carefully measured and "shrink" all the windows to the level and size which we all felt comfortable with. May be it's not as blight with smaller windows, but it's certainly more secure! Re: Awning Windows versus Sliding Windows???? 13Nov 09, 2009 3:34 pm Lots of large windows (if they are not double glazed) would also mean greater costs for heating and cooling. Re: Awning Windows versus Sliding Windows???? 14Jan 16, 2011 7:35 pm For those with awning widows and curtains. Do you find it annoying having to move the delicate light coloured sheers in order to be able to open/close the windows? Re: Awning Windows versus Sliding Windows???? 15Jan 16, 2011 7:36 pm Actually that would be the same as with sliding windows. Doh! Re: Awning Windows versus Sliding Windows???? 17Jan 17, 2011 8:06 am We're having awning windows all round on this build. The first time we built we had double hung windows on the facade and the remainder were sliding, but I hate all the dirt and dust in the tracts and forever trying to clean them! Also, this time we're building a double story so we felt it were safer for the children. Re: Awning Windows versus Sliding Windows???? 18Jan 17, 2011 8:16 am I have a mixture of awning and sliding windows. Awning windows to the street (more secure) and sliding windows to the rear (can really open them up for maximum air flow. We also have some motorised awning windows up high to get good cross flow even when it's raining. Have to be motorised since they are way up. Never experienced sliding windows lettign in dust. What have others found? Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 Re: Awning Windows versus Sliding Windows???? 19Jan 17, 2011 8:52 am We have both - sliders definitely allow better ventilation, but as previously mentioned, awnings can usually be safely left open when it's raining. I hate having to close all the windows on a warm day, just because it's raining. Our awning windows are all tall, narrow ones - sliders the same shape would just look silly and be ineffective. The awnings do look nicer, and we have them on our facade for that reason. Re: Awning Windows versus Sliding Windows???? 20Jan 17, 2011 11:03 am Hi, With upvc windows, awnings perform better than sliders because of a double rubber seal. Actually any window type would perform better than sliding across many different parameters, air-leakage, u-value, acoustic insulation, etc. Awnings can and do provide better ventilation than sliders, by reducing the sash size, while increasing the number of panels. Also, it helps if you think about window placement to take advantage of sea breezes etc. Sliders are always popular because of the convenience in use and operation. In relation to the article about children falling out of sliding windows, awning windows can be just as dangerous. The only window to possibly reduce this risk of falling out is the tilt & turn window, because while in the tilt position, it leans into the room from the top, and not bottom. You can also disengage the side opening function completely and restrict the mechanism to open only a few centimeters. Children can learn to open the windows quickly, so even if the window is closed - with casement, sliding or awning windows they can open them and climb out. Tilt and turn window is probably the safest for children in terms of operation. Examples of tilt and turn window can be found here: http://www.windowfactory.com.au/Double- ... ery02.html Cheers, Sydney Double (and now Triple) Glazed Windows and Doors mob 0412 717 066 Sydney, Canberra, Newcastle, Wollongong www.doubleglazedwindows.net.au 4 14255 we have a standard size and often we have a lot of variety to choose 0 3563 Thanks Chippy,I do have one that I levered out.
