That would be laminated glass - but it depends upon the window construction whether it is worth getting... as it's only as strong as the window. Re: help I keep getting burglarized 5Oct 22, 2009 9:21 pm We have two big dogs, but they are sooks and did not stop us getting burgled. After that we got an alarm. Been OK since then. I think most burglars see an alarm and just go next door as it's not worth the risk. Reality is that keys and locks only keep honest people out your house - burglars can break through most things to get into a house, unless you make it like Fort Knox. So I reckon get an alarm Re: help I keep getting burglarized 6Oct 23, 2009 7:25 am I have round wooden dowls in my windows, it stops them from being opened. Not sure if it really works, but makes me feel safer. The house I am building got broken into and they jammed the window open, I reckon the wood would of definetly stopped them. Re: help I keep getting burglarized 7Oct 23, 2009 10:20 am I'll be getting an alarm, thanks. To replace windows with better quality ones and tougher glass etc, am I restricted to things that will fit with the currently installed window frame? that is the outer aluminium frame is cemented to the brick or something? that is what somebody told me Re: help I keep getting burglarized 8Oct 23, 2009 10:25 am free will I think most burglars see an alarm and just go next door as it's not worth the risk. Wrong. Burglars see an alarm and know they've got, at worst, 15 or so minutes to rifle through your house before someone might come to investigate. Instead of an alarm, just stick one of the strobe light boxes out front and put "This house protected by monitored alarm" stickers on your windows. That'll be sufficient to stop the crims who don't want to deal with an alarm; and as for the ones who aren't bothered by an alarm, well, at least you'll have saved yourself money with the useless alarm and monitoring costs. Or if you must have an alarm at least put one in that contacts you rather than a monitoring company. Re: help I keep getting burglarized 9Oct 23, 2009 10:33 am Funny this came up - I got broken into yesterday for the first time. I came home from work and my front door was open, so I walked in, grabbed the biggest knife I could see and quickly went exploring before calling the cops. Had to wait 2 1/2 hours before the cops got there (although the police station is a 5minute walk from my house!), so I was standing out the front, in the dark, by myself, holding this big kick-ass knife! I must have looked like quite a psycho! Anyways, doesnt appear anything got stolen, but my front door lock got all smashed up. Apparently this is the new thing? It looks like they've slid something down the side of the lock then kicked it open. I live in a little mining town, so nobody bothers with alarms etc, as theres not usually too much crime. The cops think my dogs would have scared them off as soon as they heard someone coming in the door. (Ive only got a staffy and kelpie, but the kelpies got a mean bark on him and the staffy looks kind of tough, although shes really a sook!) Moral of the story - no matter who you are, or where you are living, theres still a chance you could get targetted. Get an alarm!! But seriously, bigger dogs that are outgoing will stop them. My dog is not agressive at all, and if someone broke in he'd lick them to death. BUT when someone even starts walking close to our house he gets all excitied thinking someone is coming over for a visit, and starts barking and running up to the fence/door. If a robber came and a dog came running up barking that was half his height, that would most likely scare them. I agree alarms don't work, security cameras are useless unless the police have them on file (it won't go on crime stoppers), the best way is to get screens on your windows, and the smash proof glass. And not all screens are ugly. There's some out that I've seen that looks like a sheet of metal with holes in it, and it's just like a super-heavy duty fly screen. Also, keep your lights on at night - everywhere, outdoor lights are good too. Make it look like someone's home ALL the time. If you only put outside lights on when you go out, it looks obvious. And keep a radio and TV on - sounds like someones in the house. Re: help I keep getting burglarized 14Oct 23, 2009 6:48 pm bigdenis d@n Alarms are good. The massive noise they make inside the house makes you want to get out. Saved me once in my old home. Please do tell. Nobody was home at the time. The crim broke a window on the blind side of the house entering into one of the bedrooms. As soon as he left the room and stepped into the hallway, alarm went off and he fled jumping out of the window. We know this cos there was small boxes and books under the window undisturbed. He was probably inside for less than 30 secs. Nothing was stolen. Many years before that (pre alarm) we got burgled. So I know what it's like to come home and see the place in a mess and stuff gone. And being burgled when you're home is also a nightmare experience. Alarms are a must. I just wish I could buy a portable version for my rental. Re: help I keep getting burglarized 16Oct 23, 2009 8:02 pm I have a standard internal alarm. Understand you can get ones 20dB higher via imports that are strictly illegal in Aus. But highly effective in getting burglars out the house. Where I live, lots of people around during the day - I was over the road within 60s when a neighbour's alarm went off. So I think alarms are pretty good. Re: help I keep getting burglarized 17Oct 23, 2009 8:33 pm mrs_smith Also, keep your lights on at night - everywhere, outdoor lights are good too. Re: help I keep getting burglarized 18Oct 23, 2009 8:42 pm We were robbed twice in one month. So when we put our alarm in we put 2 of the sound thingies inside our house and 2 outside. I dare any burglar who appreciates his hearing to stay in our house for 15 minutes. Re: help I keep getting burglarized 19Oct 23, 2009 8:43 pm My brother was recently burgled. He has a waterfront property on a fairly steep gradient - the house is at the top of the hill. He and his mates were down the bottom at the waterfront having a BBQ. My sister-in-law had taken their baby and 6 year old back up to the house to bed and had laid down for a sleep herself upstairs - the burglars came into the downstairs level anyway and took what they could carry - mobiles, a laptop bag (the laptop wasn't in it), wallet (with no money in it), car keys (couldn't get the car out because it was parked in by a guest car). What freaked my SIL out was that the cops found a spot under a bush in the garden where they had obviously had the house under surveillance, cigarette butts etc - it gave her the creeps that they had been watched without knowing it. Also that strangers had been in the house while she and the kids were asleep!! Not nice ! Re: help I keep getting burglarized 20Oct 26, 2009 1:38 pm Oh dear. Why do you keep getting burgled?! Do you live in a really questionable area?? We’ve never been burgled, either in our current place (been here a year) or our old place (lived there for 5 years). We don’t have any major security except standard sliding glass doors and windows, with those ugly sort of circular security grill things on the doors. We’ve stuck a CHUBB Security sticker on the front and back sliding glass doors though, to hopefully deter anyone who might be inclined to find our place appealing (we don’t actually have an alarm though).
