Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Sep 30, 2009 12:05 pm I am looking at replacing all the window coverings in my house but I'm on a tight budget. I am thinking about vertical blinds as an option because of the low cost and practicality. What is your opinion on these? Do you like the look of them? I like the look of venetians but I'm not too keen on the amount of dusting required. Re: Vertical blinds. What is your opinion? 2Sep 30, 2009 12:09 pm i have venetians on all bedrooms at my current rental..and like u say I HATE cleaning them. for our new build we have chosen vertical blinds...we have vertical blind at our current rental at the lounge and dining and it looks good....ofcourse i prefer good old curtains to any of these....but for the price i would go vertical blind.. What is your opinion? 3Sep 30, 2009 12:22 pm Vertical blinds seem to of fallen out of favour somewhat, not sure why, I like them, they are practical and good looking, we have them in minor bedrooms with netting curtains, and on their own on kitchen, dining and bipart sliding doors of family room. Re: Vertical blinds. What is your opinion? 4Sep 30, 2009 12:55 pm My preference wouldn't be verticals, but it comes down to personal taste when choosing anything for your home. Some reasons why I wouldn't have verticals in my home (bearing in mind that DH's work means we move a lot, and are in rental houses with verticals most of the time). - When there is any wind (A/C or doors/windows open) in the house they move a lot and make a lot of noise - I've never seen nice colours or fabrics/patterns of them - If you have children or inside pets the bottom chain always gets caught, tangles and broken at some stage Again, it is all personal preference. Good luck with your decisions! Re: Vertical blinds. What is your opinion? 5Sep 30, 2009 1:52 pm We dont have little kids but we do have a little dog who is inside most of the time: have been in house 11 months and no chains have broken. Only the sliding doors go to the floor (of course ), the other windows are about a foot above floor height, except the kitchen which is above the bench. Re noise of them rattling in wind, if you have them installed so they open away from the window opening (or in the case of our bipart doors, away from the middle) then it is easy to have the window open and the verticals away from the opening. Works for us with sliding windows anyway. I guess the point about nice fabrics and/or patterns is subjective and a matter of personal taste, however we got our blinds custom made and there are a wide range of colours, fabrics, patterns available Re: Vertical blinds. What is your opinion? 6Sep 30, 2009 6:55 pm Our rental has them and the one before this one had them as well. I can honestly say I HATE THEM!!!!! These ones go to the floor and are always getting things caught on them, they never sit flat after a couple of years, and as they sit away from the wall when they are closed there is still heaps of light that comes in around the sides. We have a street light our the front of this place and our room is at the front, so I've taken to sleeping with an eye mask on just to try to get some sleep. Drives me absolutely mad! In our new house I'm thinking of simple roll up black out blinds, with maybe a curtain over the top of them to give them a nicer look. We have verticals in our current house on every window, and the bottom chains are broken on every one. The kids are barley even rough with them, they're just flimsy and not long-lasting. The cords to adjust them have also long since broken (we've been here for 7yrs but still!) I'm actually ripping them all out this weekend and replacing with venetians to sell our place. Just my 2c. What is your opinion? 8Oct 01, 2009 5:02 pm Thanks for all the replies everyone The house I'm living in at the moment has verticals and i have to admit a lot of them have broken chains. I have seen some on the market that don't have chains at the bottom. Not sure how well they work though. I would think they would go flying around everywhere if there's wind. Does anyone have verticals without chains at the bottom? Re: Vertical blinds. Does anyone have verticals without chains at the bottom? Yes I have verticals without the chains at the bottom and theyre awful. The weights are heavier but they fall out all the time with wind and the worst part is if the wind is strong they flick out against the window really hard and you think you have cracked the window. Also theyre a pain if you have pets..always getting tangled in them. I am gonna get venitians and put up with the cleaning. Building with Homebuyers Centre El Questro! What is your opinion? 10Oct 01, 2009 5:49 pm We had verticals in the first home we built and after that we said never again. One toddler and one mini poodle meant tangles day after day. We are sticking with roller blinds in the living areas plus main bedroom. All minor bedrooms are having timber venetians with hold-down clips (renting a house at present without the clips and the venetians flapping around in the wind has marked all the architraves terribly). All bedrooms are also having sheer curtains over the top to "finish" the rooms off. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Vertical blinds. What is your opinion? 11Oct 01, 2009 5:54 pm The concept of verticals is good...but (sorry if I offend anyone) they are ugly & poor in design. How about holland blinds? They aren't too dear & don't need much cleaning, if any. Life's too short too drink bad wine Re: Vertical blinds. What is your opinion? 12Oct 01, 2009 6:21 pm No good on sliding doors though, Hammerhead I like the way verticals can be angled to be partly open or opened right up, actually I quite like Holland blinds too but I did find in my old house that they rattled in the breeze with sliding windows - far more than verticals (with sliding windows ,that is, may be good with awning type openings) because you cant take the blind away from the window opening. I agree Holland blinds were good from a cleaning point of view - what I dislike about horizontal blinds like venetians is they way they gather dust, pain to keep clean IMO. I think I better stop posting in here - starting to feel like a vertical blind sales rep Re: Vertical blinds. What is your opinion? 13Oct 01, 2009 8:14 pm Would never consider them I'm afraid. Personal opinion I guess. www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Vertical blinds. What is your opinion? 14Oct 02, 2009 9:24 am I hate verticals with a passion, they're ugly, don't work properly, break at the slightest provocation, are painful to clean, and instantly get ripped down from any place I've had where they were installed. Re: Vertical blinds. What is your opinion? 15Oct 02, 2009 9:33 am no no no no no - Seriously find something else! They flap around in the breeze, the connecting string things break (especially if on the western side) and they are REALLY daggy! They aren't even that cheap! In our new house we did plain blockouts close to the window and then a plain sheer on top (like in resorts) - we bought them as "magic drapes" from Spotlight because all you have to do is hem them (you can even use iron on hemming tape) for the living areas we bought some really nice tab tops from Freedom that were $30 each..... Ikea alos has some great stuff like ready made curtains and those panel curtains. In the bathrooms we did white Eco venetians from Super A Mart. Re: Vertical blinds. What is your opinion? 16Oct 02, 2009 9:59 am I think they are ugly and the gather dust just as much as other blinds but ar harder to clean. Although everyone has a differnet opinion and many love them. I am getting roller blinds as I like the look of them but heaps of people on here hate them too! Re: Vertical blinds. What is your opinion? 17Oct 03, 2009 3:12 pm Hate hate hate hate vertical blinds with a passion, they are noisy in a breeze and get jammed and are just ugly. We had them in our last home and they were awful. Anything would be better ! Re: Vertical blinds. What is your opinion? 20Oct 14, 2009 7:25 pm I'm actually surprised how many people dislike verticals. I am investigiating vertical or roller blinds for my place too.
