Browse Forums Windows & Doors Re: Windows by the sea 3Sep 19, 2009 11:50 pm Lelu Hello, I'm new to this forum and it's great. I've spent about a week reading threads and have found them to be most informative so thanks. My first question is regarding windows. We are extending our house and installing aluminium sliding windows. The builder has ordered powder coated from Trend Windows. My neighbour has this brand, and they have start to pit after 5 years. The complication is that we live within 100 metres of the coastline. Has anybody had experience with "marine grade" windows and approx what % higher cost are they? I'm getting a bit nervous about using Trend after another neighbour had problems with them. The problem is the order was put in last week and I can't speak to the builder until Monday. My other question is double glazing. One room has windows on three sides we were thinking that the cost of double glazing (only) that room would probably be more or less the same as thermal curtains. Keeping out the cold is the priority. Any advice? There is no such thing as "marine grade" windows, though you may be better off with PVC. Corrosion in coastal areas is a stated problem for aluminium windows, but having supplied over 80,000 homes I have never had a complaint from a coastal area. You must wash windows regularly, DON'T USE WASHING UP LIQUID AS IT WILL CAUSE CORROSION. Use car wash detergent. Unless you plan to keep your curtains closed - in which case you can use bricks - I would look at double glazing, but only if that room can be isolated with a door.
