Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Sep 01, 2009 5:42 pm Hi all, Am after some advice on whether to put in 2 smaller or 1 larger window in the living room... We are having a custom house design built, which the builder/designer has recommeded some rooms with 2 smaller windows rather than 1 larger window. The front bedroom, facing NW (not MBR) has two 900mm wide by 1800 high windows on a 3300mm wide wall. We have agreed to this due to the fact that it's on the front of the house, for aesthetic appeal more to the front of the house. We have already asked for the Bedrooms 2 and 3 on the Sw facing side of the house to have one larger, rather than 2 smaller windows. The living room, facing NE, currently has two windows 900mm wide by 1800 high as well, but I am not convinced of this design... The window wall is 4900mm long with each of the windows 300mm from the corners. I know there is the advantage of having extra wall space to put furniture, but would dread to end up with a dark living room... Just wondering if anyone has any particular thoughts/tips with regard to these window choices? Sorry there's no floor plan posted, it's a bit tricky at the moment. Any comments would be greatly appreciated, as we meet with our builder again tomorrow . Land settlement = 23/09/09 YAY!! It all depends on what you are planning to do with the room regarding window placements. Re: One large or two smaller windows? 3Sep 01, 2009 6:54 pm THanks, buildingwithhamra... good to hear of someone else with the same setup. Was thinking that the 900mm wide windows would be too narrow and the room wouldn't get enough daylight. Was thinking of asking for slightly wider ones, i.e. 1200mm each, but then I guess one loses more of the wall space for putting furniture... Have managed to scan a floorplan for perusal... http://i918.photobucket.com/albums/ad22 ... rPlan2.jpg Thanks again, Roz Land settlement = 23/09/09 YAY!! I think the two windows would be the same light as the one window, but it all depends on your furniture placement. There is no point doing one window if you are going to put a lounge in front of it. Re: One large or two smaller windows? 5Sep 01, 2009 8:17 pm Lounge - when are you planning to use it? if it is at night then daylight is less of an issue. You can get window treatments to make the windows appear larger without (or v minimal) blocking the daylight. You will be then left with just over 2m (on assumption of curtains are put up) of space that you can put a picture/furniture. Make the windows too big and you have the issue of too much sun during the day from the N/E aspect. In our house (most def not a new build) our lounge has a wall a little bit longer with windows of similar size (although not as close to the corners) and this faces south-west. We do have a window to the west and we have good light, but less winter sun due to shadowing from next door - in short I still think you will get enough light for day use. Another consideration - as said we have a similar wall where the window is not as close to the corner and along one wall (at right angle to windowed wall) we have cupboards with book shelving above. If you want to do something similar 300mm will not be enough. I think you need to look at how you will use the room, measure the size of furniture you will put in this room and where you will place it and this should give you some direction as if the windows are the right size/place for you Re: One large or two smaller windows? 6Sep 01, 2009 11:55 pm Thanks buildingwithhamra and 4walls. We have still to buy furniture so this makes it a bit tricky to visualise the room layout... good point though that 300mm is narrow for fitting furniture down the side walls. Will have to make some to scale cut outs of furniture me thinks and have a play around to work out where the windows will best fit. thanks again. Land settlement = 23/09/09 YAY!!
