Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Jun 07, 2007 3:55 pm The front doors on the house we've just bought are solid western red cedar french doors (rebated edge). The only hardward currently on them is an entrance knob handle and sliding bolts at the top and bottom on the inside. This seems totally inadequate to me and I want to replace it but I'm not sure what the best hardware for french doors is.
I was told by one store that latches/bolts might not be the best because the latch/bolt isn't going into a solid wall so can be forced open. They suggested that deadlocks might be better. Does anyone know or have any views about the best hardware for front french doors? There are so many to choose from I'm confused. Re: French Door Security 3Jun 07, 2007 7:11 pm Hi Pearl_07
forget knobs, latches, push-locks and other old age stuff! try this !!!! www.qualital.com.au/ or some of the european style window manufacturers. The most advanced hardware systems are from Europe!!!! good luck Re: French Door Security 4Jun 07, 2007 7:57 pm Yes, I saw qualital's products at DesignBuild in Sydney last Sunday. Very nice stuff. The Italians really know how to make doors.
Pity they are located in Melbourne. A always like to touch and play before I buy. Re: French Door Security 5Jun 07, 2007 8:27 pm Casa2
Not just the Italians . This kind of hardware and joinery was mainly developed in Germany and Austria. Most window hardware companies are German (Roto, Siegenia, Schuring, Hautau, Geze, Winkhaus, GU........) Maco is Austrian Re: French Door Security 6Jun 07, 2007 8:30 pm Pearl_07, I have the French doors in Cedar off my office.
The only locking device on mine are the ones you have on yours at the moment. I would not even bother to change what I have; to me they are the best way to go on the French Doors. Cedar is such a light wood; the bottom bolt is locked into hardwood, much stronger! I have a lot of stuff in my office, two computer monitors, TV, video, DVD, mini bar fridge…..a must!! Printer scanner…..you name it I have it. My office is up off my carport, and at night I would not know what was going on up there, accept for my alarm. But still I feel safe with these locks. This is my office, you can see the doors on the back wall of windows. You can also see the locks. We were in Austria earlier this year and they do do doors and door hardware (amongst other things!)exceptionally well. Re: French Door Security 12Jun 08, 2007 10:40 am Your office looks like a restaurant.
Looks like a great place to eat lunch. 3xb Re: French Door Security 13Jun 08, 2007 11:55 am Pearl_07…I waited a long time to finally get my hands on what was once our “Guest House”! I spend a lot of hours in my office so I decided it was going to be like a second home to me……and it is. I love it.
