Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Jul 22, 2009 9:15 pm Hi All, Just after some thoughts on this one, we would like a nice glass and wood door (see below). Do people still put security doors on them? Do security doors actually make a difference? My main problem is I do not see the point in getting a nice door if we are just going to slap an ugly security door on it anyway... Really keen to hear everyone's thoughts. I think if you have a beautiful door it doesn't really make sense to cover it up. Love that door btw. We now have a blog. http://allaboutthebuild.blogspot.com/ Re: Front door with glass - security door or not 3Jul 22, 2009 9:45 pm I will be as I like having the door open and letting the fresh air into the house 'A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world.' I agree - but would go in the other direction. For us, having the front door open all the time is essential for airflow through the house to keep it cool. To keep out the mossies we need screens and for security we need a lockable door. We'll be looking at the Crimsafe or Clearguard style security doors and screens. If it will be open all the time, it makes sense to have a plainer (cheaper) front door and spend those savings on making another feature that will be seen - lighting at the front door, landscaping, facade, etc. Kylie Re: Front door with glass - security door or not 6Jul 23, 2009 8:52 am Nope we are not putting a security door on ours only because we have two opening windows both side of the door. the way we see it is that if you want to do it for security a thief isn't going to bother with the front door. when there are 2 full glass windows next to it. and we have a intercom any way if I want know who it is and what they want LOL. However, even though we have a full length sidelight by the door, it is safety glass so not so easy to break (I believe this is a legal requirement so everyone else will have this too) and also the door handle is the other side to the sidelight so breaking the glass still doesnt make it that easy to open the door. Mine is a stained glass door, which I do love, and can still admire it from the inside Re: Front door with glass - security door or not 8Jul 23, 2009 11:41 am The glass slats in our door are a little more narrow and we are not having any sidelights (going with a highlight above instead). We will not be having a security door on the front as we are down a very long driveway and there will eventually be a electric gate with an intercom that people will have to buzz to be let in. We are also having an alarm system plus deadlocks to try and deter any would be thieves. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Front door with glass - security door or not 9Jul 24, 2009 11:50 pm I like the look of the stainless steel mesh. Will be something to consider once we have started to build. I do not suppose you have an image of one of those doors fitted to a property? Hi When it rains in a particular direction water comes through the security door. It hits the main door and the bottom swells and jams. There is already a cover over the… 0 38427 Building Standards; Getting It Right!
