Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Jul 19, 2009 7:14 pm Hi We have recently bought a house in Adelaide, built in 1963 and not touched too much since it needs quite a bit of work, the bathroom is quite dark so i have phoned around for quotes on 2 new large windows and of course the cedar is more expensive than the meranti, i want the cedar as i plan to stain it but then realised what about the double glass wooden doors two metres away on the outside wall and the existing window frames? what if these are pine and the new windows are cedar, has everyone just sanded back to raw and used the same stain on different woods hoping to get the same effect? will their be a huge difference do you think? i guess people buy furniture in different stains and wood and put them in the same room, im going to come across the same at the front of the house also if i buy a front door that is cedar and all frames at the front are pine? am i worrying about something that is not going to be hugely noticable? Thanks Re: Different types of wood and staining 2Jul 19, 2009 7:22 pm Okay i just realised that they probably used a hard wood to build the old window frames, they probably arent pine, i have no idea, so also feel free to suggest what they may have been in 1963! Re: Different types of wood and staining 3Jul 20, 2009 8:04 am They may not be hardwood, they may be cedar as well. Western Red Cedar is much more durable than the meranti (Pacific Maple) in an outdoor situation even though the cedar is a softwood. It is a natural durabilty 2 and is relatively resistant to borer attack. As you said, they definately won't be pine. Re: Different types of wood and staining 4Jul 20, 2009 11:16 pm Thanks for that, that would be fantastic if they were cedar. How am i going to know though??? i know cedar is more a pinky redish wood? but thats what i thought the meranti was raw to... going to have to go to bunnings and have a look at their range maybe... Re: Different types of wood and staining 5Jul 21, 2009 5:05 pm Cedar is extremeley soft and has a very distinctive smell when cutting or sanding. There are different types of meranti, as well as different Asian hardwood timbers imported over the years and sold under the trade name 'Pacific Maple'' If the windows are that old they may not be meranti at all, but some other timber Re: Different types of wood and staining 6Jul 21, 2009 7:17 pm Yes someone else said being that old may not be cedar, thanks for your help, do you think if i stain two types of wood with the same colour there wont be too much of a difference? im probably being fussy, im sure they'll be fine... Re: Different types of wood and staining 7Jul 21, 2009 9:04 pm Actually the older they are the more likely they are cedar. The two timbers have a completely different grain structure and would look quite different even with the same stain Hi, I have an area of zincalume cladding encasing a number of external downpipes. Unfortunately one of them has been permanently stained by some diluted phosphoric acid -… 0 907 yep you need a joint, foam is easiest, will look fine once rendered with a joint. 2 5234 Hi, have purchased a house with 2 single garage doors. The Centre pillar one side sits proud to the other. Can I change 2 doors into one. Please see picture. 0 6336 |
