Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Jul 18, 2009 8:11 pm Dear window people out there, How much would it cost to change a double glazed unit from using air in the gap to argon. I've got some windows with 8 mm gaps and I really think that I need argon to get these back to the same performance as a 12 mm air gap. I've specified Viridian (was Pilkington) IGU. Can you guys let me know roughly how much I'm looking at. The windows in question are 1.6 x 2.4 m sliding window (one fixed and one sliding section). So there are two IGUs per window. Thanks, Casa Hi Casa, Argon won't get you there but Krypton would... I don't think anyone does it in Australia but... But for Argon... To upgrade your DGUs (they need to be changed) would be around $100/m² for materials... I doubt if it's worthwhile. I think you will get an improvement of around 0.2 Watts/m²/°K or 7.68 watts for each window on a 10°K heating differential and in materials the cost would be $384... That's 38 years payback running 24 hours with constant 10°K, I think the Argon would have depleted by the time this has paid for itself. The question should have been, how much extra is it to buy a DGU with argon fill (as opposed to a DGU without). That is, at the time of purchase, how much extra for argon (from Viridian, if that makes a difference). FYI it costs me about $3/m²... and what are you doing up at 4 am worrying about argon? I'll PM you about the argon price. Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 I’m in a similar position except I’m after sliding 3 stacking doors.
