Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Jul 07, 2009 12:42 pm How exactly do you make an area (wall & door) more sound proof? Our ensuite door is right next to our bed (like 2 steps away) and it’s also very small and tends to echo loudly. It’d be great if it could somehow be a bit more sound-proofed, though I don’t think we can get anyone in to open up the walls and stuff more insulation batts or whatever in there. How do you sound-proof doors better though? I always wondered this. What’s the point in having great insulated walls when the door lets it down, etc? I wonder how well sound-proofed the walls between the apartments are as well, seeing as we can hear clearly what our neighbours are saying when we’re in bed and so are they (their bed is up against the wall our bed is against, head to head). Hmm. Lol. How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: How to sound-proof doors? (ensuite) 3Jul 07, 2009 12:50 pm My only suggestion would be to buy a solid door as the one you have is most likely hollow. And use sealing around the door and a weatherproof strip at the bottom. (ensuite) 4Jul 07, 2009 3:02 pm If it's "human sounds" you want to stop, get a good door. If it's the sound of the cistern refilling then turn your stop tap on the toilet down when it's filling until it's a trickle... you won't hear it. Yes, it will take 30 seconds more to fill but it will be very quiet. Ed "ECOECO" At 'EcoEco', we design windows, we design the best windows, we do it for you, so that when you’re happy we are happy. (ensuite) 6Jul 07, 2009 3:31 pm For noises eminating from the ensuite, the more soft stuff in there, the quieter it will be. Lots of towels, floor mats etc all act to deaden sounds. A wall rack with spare towels rolled up can look good as well as act as a sound insulater. Ash. Now what about those ooo's and ahhhh's coming thru the wall? Re: How to sound-proof doors? (ensuite) 7Jul 07, 2009 3:33 pm Also the gap around a door needs to be sealed. With something like a storm seal. No point in having a drum door, it needs to be laminated or be filled with dacron or other soundproofing filler. Sometimes the room where the noise is coming from acts like a cave, so sound resinates. Might need to put some sound absorbing soft materials, here and there to stop the bounce of sound waves. and so they don't hurt themselves My 2 cents of a few multi cinema complex methods of sound proofing. (ensuite) 10Jul 08, 2009 2:08 pm Haha! It’s not actually just that. It’s certainly not the sound of the toilet refilling either. That happens really fast and it’s loud but only for a few seconds. The issue is that just general bathroom sounds…like I can’t brush my teeth or cleanse my face (or use the toilet) in there after 9.30pm cause my partner’s asleep by then (she gets up at 5.30am so has to go to bed early), and my bathroom with all my stuff is the ensuite, not the main bathroom / laundry, so I have to sort of…it’s not ideal, let’s just say. The only way to make the room less echo-y is to hang a doona over the shower door. Lol. We’ve tried hanging towels there and it doesn’t work. We already have towels on their rails in there. They do nothing. We can’t have a bath mat as the standing floor room isn’t big enough and whenever either the shower screen door or the main ensuite door opens, the mat would get completely pushed away and crumpled / caught under the door, etc. Beh. (ensuite) 11Jul 08, 2009 2:32 pm get another partner who isnt such a light sleeper, LOL - only jokeing, seriously, could you keep some of your things in other bathroom (like a 2nd toothbrush, spare makeup etc) so you can use that one when partner is asleep? have been following this thread with interest, only because I dont like ****** in bed and hearing DH *******( I wrote the word but its not showing up - anyway you know what I mean )(delicate sensitive little thing I am ) but fortunately we are both heavy enough sleepers that sounds like that or even hairdryers, electric shavers etc dont wake each other up (in DH's case I think I could use a jack hammer and he would just keep snoring ) Re: How to sound-proof doors? (ensuite) 12Jul 08, 2009 3:51 pm Heheh, well, my partner sleeps ok (she says I'm free to use the ensuite once she's asleep, but I just don't want to. It's SO loud!!!), but I can't sleep with any noise. The only reason she has the main bathroom/laundry as her bathroom (and shares it with our 2 cats) is cause in the mornings she gets up 3 hours earlier than me and can't use the ensuite or I'd never get any sleep. I can hear her in the main bathroom as it is!! *supersonic ears* I do keep a 2nd toothbrush and stuff in the laundry, but I don't like it. My ensuite is my tiny sanctuary! lol How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: How to sound-proof doors? (ensuite) 13Jul 08, 2009 3:58 pm Ok - here's an off the wall idea... buy oddments of double glazed units (glass only) to line the wall - you can paint over them and they are cheap as... add a double glazed door (or solid timber). Noise stopping power, about the same as brick veneer. Ed "ECOECO" At 'EcoEco', we design windows, we design the best windows, we do it for you, so that when you’re happy we are happy.
