Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Jul 03, 2009 9:34 pm We have several floor to ceiling (well, almost) windows with visible curtain rails, and I've been noticing many places lately that have a portion of wall that comes down from the ceiling and runs along the window wall to hide the visible curtain rail. When you stand directly at the window and look up, you can see the rail, but otherwise, it's not visible. How difficult would it be to have someone come and add this long piece of wall? How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Installing bit of wall over window curtain rails 4Jul 06, 2009 11:42 am I’m not sure what it’s called, but I think a pelmet is the actual fabric thick top bit that covers a curtain rail. I like these too, but the way my wall is configured, and the fact we have 2 sliding door windows with a section of wall separating them, and only want the curtains to pull to one side on each door/window, I think having a pelmet on each door/window would look a bit stupid. Basically, this wall bit is sort of a wall/construction version of a fabric pelmet, but would go all the way across that wall. How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Installing bit of wall over window curtain rails 5Jul 06, 2009 12:28 pm Oh, just another reason why I want one of these wall things…I find at night when I’m in bed, my current curtains are good block out curtains, but they let a lot of light in along the top, as the rail doesn’t have anything covering it. So there’s always this line of light along the top. If I had a wall coming down just enough to cover the rail, that area would not longer be visible and I’d be happy. I’ve tried to find a photo of what I’m blabbing about…here’s one of a hotel room with this type of drop down style wall. (or actually, in most cases I’ve seen, it’s more a case of the wall coming down as a sort of block from the ceiling, and the curtain rail being inside a recess all along that wall/block. In my case, I already have a drop down block wall thing coming from the ceiling, but the curtain rail runs underneath it. I just want to add a short extra block of wall all along to hide the rail. Ugh, the pic refuses to work. Sorry! How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Installing bit of wall over window curtain rails 6Jul 06, 2009 4:27 pm I know exactly what you mean - having spent many, many nights in hotel rooms. Pelmets are solid or material. This would be a solid pelmet which can either be timber, or plasterboard on a timber frame which can be painted to be the same as the ceiling or wall. I think it would look good. Often in a hotel room the curtain can be in a recess in the ceiling. Ed "ECOECO" At 'EcoEco', we design windows, we design the best windows, we do it for you, so that when you’re happy we are happy. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ If so, that's good. Apart from that I can't be of much more help. I have no idea on prices. But I've seen it done before on full length window coverings. [sneakersss] Re: Installing bit of wall over window curtain rails 8Jul 06, 2009 7:42 pm What you are after is a pelmet. They come and all sizes and formats and this is the basic edition. As for difficulty - not hard but it will cost you maybe more than you think. Re: Installing bit of wall over window curtain rails 9Jul 07, 2009 11:07 am Thank you! I’m glad you know what I mean now… Will it really cost more than I expect? Why is that? I obviously have absolutely no knowledge of building-related things, but if they drilled some holes in the existing wall block thing, constructed a long (or 2 less long) pieces of wall and then stuck them to the existing wall using the screw/holes, and then painted it all, would that really cost that much? Hmm. Now that I know more what I’m talking about, I can get some quotes. I also may want to paint the wall below the block wall thing a slightly darker colour and in which case, I could get both things done at once from the contractor. It shouldn't be too expensive - some pelmets are illuminated to light the curtains, in which case it would need to be wider. I think that’s what’s already there, with the curtain rail below it on the normal part of the wall just alongside/above where the window starts. I guess what I want is a solid pelmet to be attached and to extend down a bit from the existing bulkhead. Maybe. Lol. It’d be so cool to have the curtains illuminated!!! I’ve never seen those before. I wonder if that’d be possible…probably not though. We can’t do anything with our ceiling lights or install anything extra as we’re in a ground floor apartment and nobody can access the roof space/void. Grr. This annoys me greatly, as the wall along where the windows are is so dark…we can’t have lamps there cause there’s no power point anywhere near that wall, and we can’t install any extra lights either apparently. Re: Installing bit of wall over window curtain rails 14Jul 10, 2009 3:02 pm Does anyone think the wall pelmet will still look ok based on those pics? Any other suggestions? (the only reason I don't want a fabric pelmet is cause the curtains will be opening to one side on each window, not opening to both sides on each window, and so the pelmet would be sticking out looking stupid, in my opinion) Thanks!
