We currently have a standard 3580x2100 bi fold door which sits on the concrete slab which supports it. After two years of endless problems with the door the building company has decided to replace it with a top hung door. The lintel/header beam size that was fitted during construction of our house is made up of a c channel which is 150mmhigh x 50mmwide by 10 mm thick. This lintel was designed to only support the roof The builder now wants to use the existing lintel/header to hang the new top hung bi fold door and the builder now wants to try and hang the bifold door using the existing lintel/header. We are not sure of the weight of the door but it will a 4 panel unit, but would imagine it would weight several hundred kg. We are very concerned that the exisiting lintel was not designed to support both the roof and now a top hung door. Does anyone have any idea as to what lintel/header support would be required to support a door of this size. We are trying to resolve any issues before they remove the exisiting door which is suppose to happen over the next week or two. Thanks for any help Michael Re: Bi Fold Door Problems 2May 15, 2007 2:49 pm Off the top of my head here……if it is holding up your roof, 1 door is not going to cause any problems at all! They are normally very well balanced supports.
I would get your builder to sign a written up document stating if any problems occur from the installation of the door he is at risk. If your builder does not buck at this, then you know his is doing right by you. If he has a huge problem signing anything, I would get a second opinion!!! But to me……sounds ok, but I’m not there and can’t see the size of the load bearing beam.
