Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Jun 21, 2009 12:32 pm Hi all, I've had a quick look around - but couldn't find anything (though I'm sure it's here somewhere!). Basically, my new house will have a bathroom, separate toilet and ensuite - and by default, it's clear glass. I asked for a quote for them to swap them for frosted/privacy glass... and they said it would be around $480 all up. This seemed... well, to be honest - a bit much. I'm trying to keep my home loan as low as possible. So - basically - is this price normal? And if not, what's the best way to approach this - have the glass changed myself afterwards, or add a frosted film? (Do these films actually last in a bathroom environment?) Any advice is greatly appreciated! Re: Advice needed - frosted glass in bathrooms 2Jun 24, 2009 11:49 am Wow - has nobody done this? Should I have put this thread into the bathroom area instead? Re: Advice needed - frosted glass in bathrooms 4Jun 24, 2009 1:38 pm I have no idea of the cost upgrade either as this is standard in SA -nearly all houses have frosted glass in bathrooms and toilets, occasionally in laundries too. Come to think of it,there was a thread on this not long ago.... Re: Advice needed - frosted glass in bathrooms 5Jun 24, 2009 1:44 pm Hi Webbiegareth, We asked for frosted glass for our bathroom, WC and ensuite, and are putting in White Cathedral glass. We were told that it would be around $90 per window. Now my DH has decided he wants clear glass in the ensuite to let the light in and we'll put blinds on that window. The other windows are quoted as $176 for the two. Re: Advice needed - frosted glass in bathrooms 6Jun 24, 2009 1:52 pm I have been window shopping (literally) over the past few days and have been told the upgrade to frosted glass is $$$ more than the dimpled type glass that obscures the view. Re: Advice needed - frosted glass in bathrooms 7Jun 24, 2009 2:50 pm EcoClassic's standard obscure glass is frosted. I HATE cathedral or the satinlite that is standard. Check out a Burbank Future Range home to see what I mean. But if you need the frosted look and you only have clear, use film from here... www.windowfrosting.co.nz We use it for customers who didn't order up front... it is easy to apply your self. Frosted, dimpled - anything that works really. I thought the $480 quoted for three windows to be merely "upgraded" was excessive, to say the least! I will ask if they have a choice of dimpled too, and if that is any cheaper... otherwise it looks like I will have to go with some kind of film. Re: Advice needed - frosted glass in bathrooms 9Jun 24, 2009 11:55 pm I thought the terms 'frosted' and 'obscure' were interchangable, sorry if I have misled anyone - In SA it is standard for bathroom and toilet windows to be non clear glass Re: Advice needed - frosted glass in bathrooms 10Jun 26, 2009 3:18 pm I have to admit I'm the same.... I thought they were the same thing! Happy to be corrected though. There's a HUGE price difference between "frosted" and "cathedral glazing" (I assume that's the more dimpled look). Re: Advice needed - frosted glass in bathrooms 11Jun 26, 2009 3:44 pm I was interchanging the terms frosted and obscure also until we got into specifics. LOL for my technical term of 'dimpled glass' that must be the cathedral glass . It's not my first choice but will do the job also. Glad the pricing has come down for you. Re: Advice needed - frosted glass in bathrooms 12Jun 27, 2009 8:33 pm Having used film before, I have to say that is good for privacy without cutting out too much light (apparently better than frosted glass), but you probably have slightly less privacy (ie you can see shadows). Re: Advice needed - frosted glass in bathrooms 13Jun 28, 2009 9:15 am We had a choice of dimpled or clear as standard in bathrooms and toilets only. There was enough to do the windows in the bathroom, ensuite, toilet and even the coffee table (he thinks it looks better) A bit cheaper than the $480 quote and the stuff seems to be of good quality and has lasted 2+ years so far. Our house thread: https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=18335 Re: Advice needed - frosted glass in bathrooms 15Jul 11, 2009 10:17 am I also bought some of this film for my windows. Mine was about $75 dlls(?), but I can tell you it was a pretty good investment. It did not take me a lot of time to install them and they look so good. My mother has kept telling me to buy her some. I'm trying to keep my home loan as low as possible. We got quotes pretty much the same thing as you for 3 windows. We are putting blinds up and will probably get the frosted film. It did seem a bit excessive for us too. Re: Advice needed - frosted glass in bathrooms 17Jul 11, 2009 10:51 am GSK My brother picked up a roll of frosted film from Bunnings for under $50. That's what I'm going to be doing too! I'm also going to get roller blinds though 'A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world.' Funny enough the bank valuer (doing the final inspection before the bank would release final payment) said that he was getting film for his place too becuase obscure / frosted glass was so expensive! Also I have seen this film in someone elses bathroom and it doesn't seem to have been affected by steam etc, and seems easy enough to clean as well. I'd consider it but for our place I kind of like looking out the window at the trees when I'm in the bath (rural block so no neighbours to worry about . . . well unless someone decided to walk over at the wrong time , oh well that's what the bubbles are for!!!)
