Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 May 22, 2009 5:06 pm Hi everyone, We are have a typical modern ensuite with a large doorless entrance to the master bedroom. We are considering closing this off as we find the fan, electric toothbrushes, shower etc can be disruptive to someone sleeping esp. now that we have a baby in our room as well. We would like either a bi-fold door or a sliding door which doesn't detract fron the house's modern look - however we are open to other ideas. Any insights will be greatly appreciated, Siatros Re: Closing off the ensuite with a door ... 2May 22, 2009 5:28 pm I have no comment on what sort of door is good for your house - but yes, put a door Even if the toilet is separate I still think ensuite is better with a door, as you say noise from shower, hair dryer etc if other partner (or baby) sleeping, also privacy - yes, I know people are in love and like seeing each other naked but there are some things I prefer to do by myself - plucking my eyebrows, shaveing my legs, squeezing my pimples - need I go on??? Just my opinion of course but I would never have an ensuite without a door. Re: Closing off the ensuite with a door ... 3May 22, 2009 5:36 pm I would never have an ensuite without a door, so we put in a sliding door. There wasn't really room for an ordinary door, and I'm not keen on bifolds. The toilet inside the ensuite even has a door too. I don't need to hear those early morning noises before I have to get up! Judie Re: Closing off the ensuite with a door ... 4May 22, 2009 5:38 pm Agree with Helyn, its simply the privacy issue. I've seen displays (Milan by $imonds for example) where you can stand at the front door of the house and see through to the ensuite toilet!! With bedrooms at the front of the house, and most ensuites having doors facing the street... well, I don't exactly want to be seeing cars go by from my shower... Us, we have a cavity slider for our ensuite door. ICK So glad the building is over, never again. Loooove our house, but still not quite sure it was worth all of the stress they put us through! Re: Closing off the ensuite with a door ... 5May 22, 2009 5:45 pm You have to walk through our WIR to get to our ensuite.. so we killed two birds with one stone and just added a cavity door to the WIR so we can keep those noisy, messy and sometimes smelly areas behind a door. The opening to the ensuite is quite large though and the easiest solution that comes to mind is some sort of screen or in particular a curtain. I think that would be ideal for our place at least, but obviously would have to get it right so that it didn't detract from the size of the room or look out of place. Re: Closing off the ensuite with a door ... 10May 23, 2009 12:03 am Sounds like lots of people have the same view on ensuites ... i wonder why they still design homes with open ensuites? I read in a recent Domain the open ensuites are passe and yet I havent seen any evidence that it is being noticed by designers ... Anyway can someone help me get started? Do I simply go to a carpenter or simply go to a place which sells doors. Any experiences on what suits an ensuite will be greatly appreciated. I am leaning to a sliding door of some sort ... Block out light and noise as well as steam - plus don't really want to share my bathing habits with anyone in the bedroom. Our new home has the ensuite separated from the bedroom by a hallway and we still have a door on the ensuite. Plus as another poster said we also have the toilet in it's own separate room within the ensuite with a door as well. Some things are worth waiting for. I think it's simply that the displays look lovely with lots of open flow-through areas. It makes spaces seem bigger. Completely impractical for actually living in, of course, especially whern one of you sometimes gets up at 4:30am. I added not only a door, but a privacy lock to our ensuite. Like Helyn, there are things I prefer to do in private (and uninterrupted), thanks. Siatros Anyway can someone help me get started? Steve If you have the space, a hinged door is probably better from a noise perspective. If not, a slider or bifold will do the job. I'd have a look at some door places, get prices on both and see what they'd charge to install it. Then I'd also ring a few handyman/carpenter types and get quotes from them. Shopping around usually gives you a wide range of prices - and sometimes somebody will even suggest a better option.
