Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Apr 20, 2009 10:23 am Hey guys, We ordered a HUME door which has a lot of glass exposed on it shown below. We wanted to get the window trans laminated but our builder indicated this would not be possible. Any ideas how we can stop peering eyes from looking through the window? (we don't want to have curtains or anything like that on the door). We do have the option of getting the glass frosted but I am concerned this will detract from the general look of the house. Any creative/unique ideas? We don't care if we can't see out, as long as people can't see in either! Re: privacy options for front door? 3Apr 20, 2009 12:54 pm Thanks Bam I actually prefer the look of clear glass but did not want anyone to see into our home especially at night when the lights are on. As soon as the lights go on our blinds go down Anyway, our glass is translucent and we had it done through our builder. I'm pretty sure you can buy your own and add it on later. Kek bought something similar for her ensuite but I don't know if it looks like translucent or obscure. Happy at Home Re: privacy options for front door? 4Apr 20, 2009 1:06 pm I have a feeling Mattwalker's front door is frosted somehow - similar to those doors of yours. And it looks fantastic in his photos - check out his thread on his latest hall table purchase. Some things are worth waiting for. His glass looks like it's trans laminate almost.I actually like the look of trans lam, but I haven't seen a display home with a frosted glass door, but overall i've never been a fan of frosted glass. Kek bought something similar for her ensuite but I don't know if it looks like translucent or obscure. Our builder when I asked said we couldn't make it translucent, I'm still trying to get a reason why, but I love the translucent look. Hopefully we can find a way to get it done. I'm too lazy to do many of the things myself so if possible I'd like to go through the builder to get it done (otherwise knowing me, it will never be done). I would prefer translucent, but you cant have that can you? That is strange that you arent able to have translucent Idiots are fun, that's why there is one in every village! - Dr. House - Re: privacy options for front door? 7Apr 20, 2009 3:43 pm Clear glass can be great - we have it in our front door and sidelights, but our house design doesn't allow anyone to see past the entry, so no privacy issues to worry about. You can buy a stick-on glass film from Bunnings. Voila! Translucent glass! We have some to use on our ensuite French doors, but haven't actually done it yet.... I am going to ask the builder if their is something like that they can do for the front door. Re: privacy options for front door? 9Apr 20, 2009 9:06 pm You could also consider 3M film. I think it's in their Scotch range. It can be applied to achieve two things: 1. the privacy you want 2. security. Properly applied it's hard to break through protected glass even with a hammer. In addition it has a safety element if you have small children around because if the glass is broken it stays in situ and is 'held together' by the film...so less chance of serious injury. We had a translucent security film on a glass side panel adjacent to our front door at a previous house and had the clear security film applied to all the other windows. There's also the plus of reducing UV too. We loved it and plan to have it applied to all windows in our (yet to be built) new house Pix. Built a (highly) modified Allcastle Maxworth 38.7 in Sydney.
