Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Apr 15, 2009 12:35 pm Hi guys I've heard that Boral windows are cr*p. What window brands can you recommend or which ones should I stay away from? Re: Window brand recommendations 4Apr 28, 2009 5:13 am What's meant to be bad about Boral windows? I hope this doesn't also include Dowell. Re: Window brand recommendations 5Apr 28, 2009 6:54 am The Boral windows are Dowell windows. Several window brands are manufactured across multiple sites. Dowell for example have (from distant memory) at least a dozen plants. Rest assured that there are worse windows than Dowell. Of course.... there are better too. Boral renamed their windows back to Dowell, the company they bought the business from. They are a solid but old design... no problems. I hope you haven't finished your search yet. In regard to the right window and door manufacturer it is up to your requirements what your choice is. Framing, glazing, hardware performance and design freedom are surely part of your choosing process. We at Miglas concentrate fully on thermal efficiency and sustainable window and door design. The trend in the industry surely goes to double glazing as more and more people understand the additional comfort and energy savings that can be achieved. Given that more and more thermal efficient solutions are developed the traditional aluminium only framing looses market share. the reason for that is their poor insulation value of the highly conductive material. Timber or uPVC are better materials in regard to thermal efficiency. Miglas combines the advantages of timber and aluminium in one composite window design - Giving it the durable exterior with the aluminium and the beauty of timber to the inside. The rating is surely an aspect that shows how different windows perform. When you got to energy rating page of the Australian Window Association you will find complete range of tested windows. http://www.wers.net.au Be aware that the individual ratings will tell you more about the performance than listings of generic windows. Checking the rating does not mean that the 1st ranked window is actually the best performing, especially over time. The rating itself is just confirming the value at the beginning of the lifecycle, meaning that quality of craftsmanship and hardware components will not be fully stated by the results. Furthermore there is big problem with the influence of air infiltration in the rating. The insulation value (U Value) does only reflect the insulation with an constant air movement. That the air leakage increase this parameter and even allows more heat and noise to be transferred is not fully reflected. So be aware comparing window and just rating values is not the right way to go about. The best way to find out is actually to go and visit showrooms, even better get an inside by looking at the factory and what they are actually pushing out of the door. I hope the information add to your list of possible options and help you your decision process. If you want to know more about the versatility of our range and double glazing options you can just choose one of the links below that lead you to our page. http://www.**********.com.au or http://www.*********.com.au *********.gif Best regards Kris Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅
Re: Window brand recommendations 9May 08, 2009 4:54 pm Don't know about Dowell being rubbish. Our builder uses them and the newly built home we are currently renting has them as well (Masterton built home). Windows and sliding doors are perfect. Have not had any issues with any of them at all. GettingThere - have you experienced them for yourself? Is easy to bag something on someone else's say so but personal knowledge is always better. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Window brand recommendations 10May 08, 2009 5:38 pm kyton Don't know about Dowell being rubbish. Yes I have actually, in a newly built holiday home I recently visited. Also, a senior executive who works for Boral specifically said not to get their windows... which is why I created this thread Re: Window brand recommendations 11May 08, 2009 7:36 pm gettingThere kyton Don't know about Dowell being rubbish. Tell your friend (if he is in the industry, he will know me), that they are OK windows - not the best, and not the worst by a mile. From my experience being bound to one product often means a good margin for the builder, but not necessarily a solution that meets your requirements. Nonetheless it is up to your requirements if Boral is the right product for you. They wouldn;t be in the market if they wouldn;t offer a prodct that fulfils a certain set of requirements.
Re: Window brand recommendations 15May 11, 2009 11:51 am Miglas Windows That's too bad. From my experience being bound to one product often means a good margin for the builder, but not necessarily a solution that meets your requirements. Builders are about minimising cost, and they design their products around lowest cost to meet their needs. A builder's specified windows are usually to meet price points for the windows - sometimes they reflect a higher level of energy efficiency or aesthetic appeal - but most builders look at cost first. I agree the offering may not meet the needs of an individual client but that's the price you pay if you use a project home builder. It was just the quality that concerned me when I originally saw this thread. Re: Window brand recommendations 20May 11, 2009 6:33 pm ed @ EcoClassic No issues with Dowell, good window, good service, big name. Music to my ears Thank you. That is really helpful. Once we get the place done and passed for OC we can upgrade in the future once we get back on our feet and not paying mortgage and rent. 4 5727 I am in a difficult situation. Long story short I have been handed over my brand new home in Sydney with everything in the house being great except the windows that were… 0 861 Really tight at the top of the stairs- how to get furniture into those rooms? Study books - does anyone really use them these days? Large storage closet would be more functional. 2 6885 |
