Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Mar 25, 2009 12:07 pm Hi all, Has anyone had problems with windows not being centred in a wall when the plan shows this. I'm still doing some investigation and apparently it does depend on the number of bricks in the wall and where the bricks end etc. However, I have a few windows that are clearly off centre (around 10cm) in the toilet and study and you can pick it with the naked eye. I am bringing it up with the builder and luckily the bricking hasn't started yet but I'm just wondering how they go about changing the frame to move a window 5cm. Also, I am wondering whether anyone else has had similar problems. I know that adlse had an issue with a front window some time ago. Why can't builders do anything right? Aaaarrrrrrr! I'm just having a bad day. I should sent the builder a bill for my time and lack of sleep, stress etc. Craigburn Re: Windows centred in room 3Mar 25, 2009 7:31 pm I have just had this same problem. I designed the house myself and centred the 2 back windows so that when we get our pool table we allign it with the windows the same as the middle of the side window lines up with the middle of the pool table. As I was adament that i didnt want anything looking skewiff When i went around the framing for the windows were off centre so i called the SS and he said to meet him there straight away. He saw that I was right and made them take it all down and start again. I was really fussy with these windows they had to be perfect but i told them that before i started. In the other rooms they are not perfect but i can over look that as they wont bug me the same Know where your going in life............... you may already be there Re: Windows centred in room 4Mar 26, 2009 5:59 am our toilet window is marginally off centre, only about 3 or 4 cm and I can only tell because the window is so close to the ends of the wall ... one side is almost at the corner while the other side has a gap. I am happy it's only the toilet though, otherwise I'd be most upset I didn't actually notice it till weeks after we'd moved in. We did have an issue with some windows not being vertically centred (closer to the floor than the ceiling) but these were fixed when I brought it up with the builder "Your emotions are the slaves to your thoughts, and you are the slave to your emotions." — Elizabeth Gilbert Living in our new house. It was three windows in question, the study, our master bedroom at the front of the house and the toilet. We have contacted the builder and they have agreed to centre the windows in the study and master bedroom as one was carpenter error and for the master bedroom the cuts required in the bricks can be hidden under the render around the window. The bigger problem is the toilet which is 9.7cm out of wack (one side has 7.5cm to the wall, the other side has 17.3cm). In initial discussions with the builder they raised the brick spacing and said that they need a minimum of 35cm on either side of the toilet window (one and a half bricks wide) for the laundry sliding door and the bathroom window. That is the exact space that they have on either side at the moment with the window off centre. I am now about the start discussing with them whether we can change the 60cm window to a 47cm so that they right side of the window stays where it is and the left side (which currently has far less space) moves to the right because the window will be smaller. This will still result in a difference of about 2cm but you shouldn't be able to pick it with the naked eye which you can at the moment. It will mean that we have quite a small window in the toilet. What do people think? Would you rather have a smaller window which lines up with the toilet which is sitting directly under or a bigger window which is off centre to the toilet sitting in the centre below? The room is 90cm wide. Thanks again. Re: Windows centred in room 6Mar 26, 2009 8:51 am great that they are willing to fix up the big ones for you craigburn. I would prefer a smaller, centred window in the toilet. It's only a toilet after all, a smaller window would serve the same purpose as a larger one. Re: Windows centred in room 8Mar 26, 2009 4:26 pm Hi all, Well the builder has got back to me and, whilst I don't understand exactly what they are going to do, they are going to cut the bricks differently so that they are still structurally sound but the 60cm window will fit and be centred from the inside. Apparently the bricks between the window and sliding door in the laundry might look a little wierd from the outside (it's a patch of only 35cm) but the toilet is on the service side of the house (only 1m from the fence) and we have a split level home so the lower part of the house (where the toilet is) will be 1m below the level of the road (hence no-one should be able to see driving past). Overall, we are happy with the outcome as, unless our neighbours want to stick their head over the fence and have a look, no-one should notice and the window will be centred from the inside. Whilst our builder has been difficult in some areas and we still have some issues outstanding, I do have to give them credit about how quickly they dealt with this and their desire to reach a conclusion that we were happy with. Thanks for your advice. Just out of curiosity, would everyone accept the above proposal knowing that the brickcourse will be a little out in that small area compared to the rest of that side of the house in order to have a window centred from the inside?
