I am currently having the same dilemma. Mine just slide from one side though, yours look like they meet in the middle?
If money isn't an option, look at the Luxaflex Vertiglides. They are a sideways-sliding pleated blind, a stiff piece of fabric that slides back as a concertina and has a VERY small stack which would be perfect for your small gap. They are hard to explain, they are on the Luxaflex website but I didn't truly understand them till I saw them in person. I am currently looking for a cheap and cheerful alternative (ie hoping another company makes them at a cheaper price!) not having much luck so far Luminettes might be another option? Otherwise I think I'd stick with the rollers (but get separate ones for each pane so you don't have to open the whole lot just to open one side of the door). We are thinking of going with panel glides if I can't find a cheaper vertiglide, but not sure how they'd work with a door meeting in the middle? Good luck, let us know how you go! Re: Window covering for 3080x2400 sliding doors...help! 4Feb 19, 2009 11:12 pm gee, we will have similar problems too. If you can afford panel glide, I would give this serious consideration, because I can't think of any other blinds that would suit opening doors. I don't particularly like curtains on sliding doors, but some people have them and are happy.
Any blind that rolls from the ceiling (eg roman or austrian) is not suitable. I think I will try to get the wide panel glider (not the old vertical blinds) and will probably have then open (or semi-open) most of the time. I think I may also put a more decorative curtain (for looks only) at the end of each of the window. (to sort of dress it), but even that might be too much... Let us know what you decide because we are all going thru the same dilemma with sliding doors. Annie A thankful person is a happy person. id love some sliding shutters but thats gonna be outta the budget id love some venetian blinds but they just arent made for lifting up and down Blog - http://snakedr.blogspot.com/ Build Thread - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=12084&p=307406#p307406 Status - PCI 15/10. we always open blinds right up of a day, its just the night I like to close them so I dont feel like a goldfish.. money is a concern with us also, to the effect that hubby has even said we'll put the old verticals back up, even though they'll now be a foot too short! errr, NO THANKS! so i priced the panel glides with Crosbyonline, looking at about $800 per slider... then I saw a picture on another thread of the seperate rollers, as someone just mentioned above, which also looks good, but i'd have to have 3 on each slider ie. 2small ones on the outside fixed panels and 1large one for the sliding panels... wonder if that would look silly, or even work out any cheaper? ohh and i have to agree, those sliding venetians look fantastic, but too exxy for us Re: Window covering for 3080x2400 sliding doors...help! 7Feb 20, 2009 9:00 am We used Rollers on our sliding doors, thought its a lot neater and easier to get around! Working well! What if you do a combinationof rollers and panel guides? Alot of places have colors which will match in both design!
We went to a place called Home outlet in hoppers crossing, believe there are other locations, they are great! (plus they have 24months no deposit interest free! ) The do custom made rollers or off the sheft, as well as panel guides! and even better very competitive prices (we thought so, no one else could match it!) Heres a link to their site, might find they have something that can help you http://homeoutlet.com.au/portal/ Re: Window covering for 3080x2400 sliding doors...help! 8Feb 20, 2009 9:10 am cobylee, do you have a budget in mind?
We were going to go with home outlet to get panel glides, our sliding doors are just over 4m's and they wanted about $400 but their std range only goes just over 3m in width.....and the std aniseed colour we want is then a more exp material and its then a custom order so $$$$$ But i found the same material for the glides that we want and the mechanism to suit - at Ikea! Cost - same as Home outlet, around $400 for the 4m door for us. Later on i was going to get a pelmet made and cover it in the same material for a more streamlined look. Heres the link if you're interested? http://www.ikea.com/au/en/search/?query=panel+curtains Its called a KVARTAL system. There are diff panel colours, styles, textures available. Hope that helps? Re: Window covering for 3080x2400 sliding doors...help! 9Feb 20, 2009 8:32 pm the home outlet looks good, but im in nsw and even the nearest Ikea is 3hours away!!
Phoenix, I have been eying off Ikea's panel blinds, though, but its so hard to tell the texture, sturdiness etc from their pics.. are they just soft like a soft fabric, or are they rigid? So I then need to buy a top&bottom track for them to run on? actually, would you mind telling me exactly which bits n pieces you needed to buy for it to be operating, and if it is up do you have any pics... sorry for the 20questions, but since I cant just 'pop in' to ikea it would be so handy to hear it from someoone in the know...pm me even? Im leaning towards the panel glides from crosby, as im not really a fan of having curtains run across that whole back of the house, when everything is is more streamlined (if that makes sense!) the only thing holding me back at the moment is the $900 price tag for EACH door does that sound about right? I just wish IKea wasnt 3 hours away Re: Window covering for 3080x2400 sliding doors...help! 12May 02, 2009 9:01 pm Cobylee, we just paid a special visit to Ikea (combined with the Homeshow ) in Sydney (also 3 hrs away as we're in Canberra!) for the same reason Info on Ikea panel glides: You need to buy either: ready prepared 'panel' - this comes with top and bottom aluminium 'slides' - about $14.95 for the sheer fabrics, goes up for the heavier fabrics. TBH, I found the ready made ones a bit disappointing - the sheer ones (a soft, floaty fabric) were not side hemmed and the ones on display were all fraying. The heavier material (not rigid but nearly!) ones didn't hang straight (looked like they needed an iron and sort of buckled), and weren't side hemmed either. Don't think any of them were heavy enough to be block outs but could easily have missed some! I think what Phoenix has done is the way - buy the 'system' and get your own material! Easy enough, just a strip of fabric hemmed! Costs: Top and bottom rail (to attach the material to) - 45cm rails - $8 and 60cm rails - $10 (for 2rails) Wall brackets (2 brackets per 140cm track) - $5 ea Single Track - 140cm - $12 or 110cm - $8 OR 3 Track (panels glide on separate tracks to all open together at each end if you can picture that!) - 140cm - $30 ea But, not sure how this would work on a 4m door ??? I'll leave the maths up to you! Freedom also has panel glides but not sure on the pricing for the glide system, i have written down that its $149 for a 300cm, 6 panel system with each fabric panel at $29.95 (55cmx240cm)... they also have 4 panel 200cm systems ($109) so this might work? (But not sure if this is the total cost or not) I'm with you though on the question of whether panel glides would keep in enough heat...I guess if you use a heavy enough material, it's no different to verticals...(which aren't that great either for keeping in heat...hmmm) We also visited vista today - they have vertical blinds, covered in a sheer material (actually just velcroed around the top of each slat!) which I think they call drape blinds or something.. they look ok! Not sure how they compare to the others mentioned below as haven't seen any of the others! Hope this helps! It is a dilemma covering sliding doors in anything but verticals! We also have a 4-panel with the two opening doors in the middle..3.6m wide.. We have friends that have the honey comb blinds on to them and they have them so that they lift to just over the doors. and then we have a neighbour who has the panel glides and they look nice or you can do just curtains. so u have a few ways to go hope you work it out soon.
