Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Feb 18, 2009 9:58 am Our toddler has decided the best way to exit outside is via the screen door, but has pushed the through the mesh . It is pretty worn and loose so easy to break through anyway.
I was thinking of replacing it with a sliding security door with toughed meshed (but without the grill) with a lock for more security and so the boys just can't let themselves out if I don't notice. I've had one quote for a no grill toughened mesh triple lock sliding door for $800. Does this seem right.....or is there another option out there? Would rather not have a grill as it looks to the outside. Thanks. Re: Toddler proof sliding door screen 3Feb 18, 2009 10:56 am Sounds like you are asking for a security door - that's about the price for stainless grill.
You could use a less strong version by using a fly door with stainless mesh - I would think less than half your price - maybe $300? There is also a galvanised steel mesh (comes in black). Check out your options first. Ed "ECOECO" At 'EcoEco', we design windows, we design the best windows, we do it for you, so that when you’re happy we are happy. She also pointed out that the grill would be better if the door was closed...I thought that was odd since a normal sliding screen doesn't look that obvious either. I am totally not keen on the grill!
You sound busy with kids we have a 2.5 year old and nine month old, both boys....also with the door would love to keep it open but the little one loves standing up and leaning on everything at the moment and need something stronger! Re: Toddler proof sliding door screen 5Feb 18, 2009 10:59 am Hi Ed sorry didn't see your response till I refreshed. Thank you!

Sorry does this mean just like a normal sliding door (like I would have now) but with a stronger mesh? Would I get one of those from a door place, more than a security door place? It would be the same as a flyscreen door but with a stronger mesh. Most use fibreglass mesh but there are many others without going to the expense of the Crimsafe style. You would buy a flyscreen door with - either stainless mesh, or Tuff mesh, or galvanised mesh. I would have thought $300 would be about right. the only thing with the cheaper ones is i dont think the lock will keep your 2.5yo in for long, if he/she's anything like mine they only have to watch you do it once...you'd really need one that you can keylock Re: Toddler proof sliding door screen 9Feb 18, 2009 11:47 am cobylee when you say grill, do you mean like the diamond pattern style? thats exactly what i dont want either! defeats the purpose of putting he sliders in!! my dad was telling me yesterday about the different mesh's. there's the basic one (which sounds like yours) then a 'dogproof' one which is 'supposedly' that bit tougher that the dog wont push through, scratch etc then must be the ones Ed has mentioned...up to the higher end with the security mesh (the one in ad's where even an axe wont get through ) the only thing with the cheaper ones is i dont think the lock will keep your 2.5yo in for long, if he/she's anything like mine they only have to watch you do it once...you'd really need one that you can keylock I don't have any - I buy from Timbarra in Hallam. I don't mean the diamond grill. It's mesh when it is flexible and rolls up and it's grill when it's in sheets. The galvanised steel is in sheets - so I call it grill... the stainless comes in mesh in a roll. In the Crimsafe style the stainless is in sheets. The dog proof one is miles tougher... Cobylee, good point about the locks and toddlers, will have to think about that too. We have round handles on our bedroom doors which our eldest one can't quiet open yet but I am worrying about when he can escape and might be able to wander around in the night without us realising. Our house is toddler proof but need to make sure he can escape exit points. Anyway gives me a good few options to check out - thank you! Re: Toddler proof sliding door screen 12Feb 19, 2009 10:34 am I have had screen doors with the "pet mesh" before and it's pretty good, I have cats and their claws didn't trash it. But it isn't secure as it can easily be cut with a stanley knife. If you want security, then you'd need to go for the proper security mesh.
Re the lock, ask them to put it up higher on the door. The lock/opener is at my chest height on our door so little kids can't reach it until they are about 10 years old. When ours was a toddler, we had all the round knobs covered by a toddler-proof cover which prevented a small hand from turning the knob. I think Bunnings have them.
