We are thinking about adding a sunroom. Problem is, we back onto a park and my DH being a cop, he is worried it will look easy to break into. I have read here and there that double glazed windows are quite difficult to break, so if we had good security screens & locks elsewhere on the room, do you think it would be difficult to break in to??? Many thanks in advance! Re: Security of double glazed windows 2Feb 09, 2009 9:28 am loco Hello all, We are thinking about adding a sunroom. Many thanks in advance! I am sure your DH knows there is nothing that can stop a thief. A brick is an easy way to enter windows that don't have security screens. The best available would be laminated glass and silicon glazing. Avoid sliding windows as these are fairly easy to overcome, awning windows are the go with a lockable chainwinder. I would also change the screws attaching the winder to security type. Laminated glass cannot be broken as it has a plastic layer bonded in between 2 pieces of glass. But it doesn't stop the glass from being taken out completely, so if it is just wedged in, as domestic window suppliers would have it, then pure force can overcome the glazing. We use silicon glazing as do all commercial window companies. This bonds the glass to the frame and makes removal very difficult. The next thing to do is to change the locks as most window companies use a narrow range of lock combinations. This response applies to the security of all windows... Are your windows internally or externally glazed? Re: Security of double glazed windows 4Feb 09, 2009 10:29 pm u9026a ed @ EcoClassic We use silicon glazing as do all commercial window companies. Are your windows internally or externally glazed? They were internally glazed but with the new design they are now externally glazed - doesn't affect the security though as the IG units are bonded to the frame. I think he is talking about the ones you can screw one way, tighten them up then cant screw them the other way to unscrew them. I think.... Thanks for the response - I went to a sunroom display room yesterday and asked about this laminated glass - they automatically do it on the bottom sections and we can have it done all over at request which is good.
