We got the shutter kit from them. This couple are very friendly. Tell you the truth, It is not hard to DIY but it takes some times to paint (anyway, I enjoyed painting with my partner). It is cheaper too. You can check out the video demo the above website. Re: DIY Plantation Shutters 6Jan 28, 2009 9:18 pm mikeval - thanks for that they are the ones i am looking at...might send them my plans for a quote. I am thinking of just stainging them so they might be a little easier to handle...
Can you show me a pic please of yours...would appreciate it... Sharon & Paul ********************* Creating Youngs Castle Heywood 29 in Craigieburn http://youngscastle.blogspot.com/ Re: DIY Plantation Shutters 7Jan 29, 2009 7:49 am We are going to use these... well maybe... The other half dosn't trust my handyman skills and is worried that they will look *******, so I will first do the small window in the W/C and if it pass's the boss's inspection, do all the windows that we want. If it dosnt pass Q/C then its not much money wasted. Re: DIY Plantation Shutters 8Mar 02, 2009 9:39 pm mikeval http://www.portphillip.com.au We got the shutter kit from them. Thanks Re: DIY Plantation Shutters 9Mar 16, 2009 9:29 pm I bought a kit from a place in Queensland. Assembling them is relatively easy but installing them isn't. The window is very long and narrow and there are a pair of bifolding shutters either side. The problem was:
1. Getting them to hang in line with the window frame - if the shutter or the window frame is off square they will touch on the top or bottom of the frame as there is only about a 2mm allowance for gap. They only have to be out by the smallest amount to cause a problem. The only way to rectify it is to space the hinge out from the window frame slightly. 2. Getting the bifolded shutters to hang perfectly in line as a pair while still maintaning the correct gap for both of them and getting them to open and close smoothly. Part of the problem here is if you have a pair hanging off one side the weight on the hinge makes them sag ever so slightly - this means that if you have a perfect gap at the fixed end then chances are in will touch on the hanging end. 3. They have an allowance included so that the total width of the shutters adds up with minimal gaps between them. But what happens if the kits are slightly out or the frame is out of square and you had to space the top or bottom hinges out? Your gap is reduced to nothing and it's out with the electric sander. Overall I can totally recommend against using them unless you have a very simple installation. I'm usually a reasonable handyman but obviously have my limits - there was just way too much stuffing around with these. I really think they should be assembled in a jig and clamped before gluing and screwing together as the tolerances required cannot be achieved simply by snapping them together thinking that the factory fit will be good enough. In fact it's put me off using plantation shutters full stop. Thankfully I didn't waste too much money but they will be going straight out with the hard rubbish. Re: DIY Plantation Shutters 10Aug 25, 2009 10:01 pm Sorry to bring this old thread back to life but has anyone else used the DIY shutters? I was all set on getting some until I read Mozzie's post... Has everyone else experience the same problems? Mozzie, if you are reading this, did you purchase your kit from http://www.shutterkits.com.au/shutter-k ... fications/ Building a Wisdom Prosperity 23 - http://erwisdomprosperity.blogspot.com/ Re: DIY Plantation Shutters 11Aug 26, 2009 7:58 am eek, i was planning to grab some diy's from shutterkits for my master bedroom sliding door as well as my 3m double slider in the lounge.... any other feedback would be great Blog - http://snakedr.blogspot.com/ Build Thread - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=12084&p=307406#p307406 Status - PCI 15/10. I have found a shop called The Wood Blind shop on Brighton Rd, they install and fit plantation shutters and from the quotes I have recieved from them so far it is almost the same price as the DIY ones. Re: DIY Plantation Shutters 17Aug 27, 2009 10:45 pm Jochicho Sorry to bring this old thread back to life but has anyone else used the DIY shutters? I was all set on getting some until I read Mozzie's post... Has everyone else experience the same problems? Mozzie, if you are reading this, did you purchase your kit from http://www.shutterkits.com.au/shutter-k ... fications/ Hi, Yeah that was the place. Overall the service and product from there was actually quite good - so my critisism isn't leveled at them at all. There was one problem however and that was the total dimensions of the shutters (4 in a row with hinges and a space where they meet in the middle) did not fit in the recess despite me giving the dimensions for them to suit. This could have been fixed with alot of sanding. My issue with the shutters is that to look good they need to be millimetre perfect in the window recess and open and close smoothly. They also need to be able to shut perfetly level with each other and sit dead straight. Is this possible with a mallet, some glue, a drill and basic DIY experience? No, I don't beleive it is. I honestly think that plantation shutters are one of those things that look great, especially in display homes, but have been cheapened down to a product that looks good but is mostly crap. If you want real ones then I'm sure a craftsman could make them to suit each window with latches and locks that are actually funtional and add real value to the windows and the house. The ones sold in stores are essentially something flimsy and cheap that perform to an even lesser degree than a common venetion blind. This wasn't my initial impression when I decided to try them out but it is now. I ended up getting wooden venetions through Luxaflex for a similar price to the DIY planation shutters but that was my decision. If people like their plantation shutters or prefer the look of them then I'm certainly not going to question their choice - I'm really just explaining why I canned them in my last post. Re: DIY Plantation Shutters 20May 25, 2012 2:19 pm They are only hard to install if you have the wrong information. I can understand why 'mozzie' below had so much trouble with his DIY BI-fold installation. Having installed a few, alignment can be an issue. There is another site not mentioned so far (DIYShutters.com.au) which supplies DIY and complete shutters at competitive prices and they recommend avoiding bi-fold. Having done many, I found using a pivot hinge is a simpler and easier solution for installing shutters in a wide window as the hinge has it's own adjustment in different directions. The site also has an on line manual for assembly and coating as well as installation. You can save a massive amount of money if you don't mind spending a weekend painting etc. Just get your measurements right.
