Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Jan 18, 2009 5:19 pm We're planning a major reno project on our 8th floor apartment in Potts Point which has a partially-open, north-facing balcony with a nice view of the harbour - but it is exposed to the wind from the NE.
We plan to enlarge the opening from from the living room to the balcony (to 3500 x 2300mm) and to install 4/5 pane framless bifold doors (like these) in the new opening. We'd also like to enclose the balcony opening (3000 x 1200 mm) with 4-pane frameless sliding windows (like these) to provide shelter from the wind or ventilation as required. Questions: 1. Will the door seals on frameless glass sliding windows be strong enough to prevent wind whistling through them. 2. Should we specify any particular type of glass or frame. 3. Any recommend suppliers in the Sydney area? Photos and plans at http://www.tinyurl.com/85macleay Re: Frameless Bifold Doors and Sliding Windows - any good? 2Jan 18, 2009 9:09 pm Pewit Questions: 1. You say that they are going to be exposed to winds, you will be kept awake at night with the noise of the air rushing through the gaps. Even when I have used clear PVC seals on the gaps between panels, there is still noise. 2. We use the CDS system, its the most expensive, but it is the best quality money can buy. Its also the easiest to install, so what you spend in buying the parts you save in install costs. 3. They look good and work well. Re: Frameless Bifold Doors and Sliding Windows - any good? 3Jan 19, 2009 12:22 am Thanks for the input - I have investigated further and the Aneeta Sashless Sliding Windows are AS 4027 certified for wind/rain protection whereas I don't believe frameless bifolds are available that have been certified.
Therefore we could have the Aneeta windows to provide the main wind protection and the inner bifold doors as a supplementary - could that work? Re: Frameless Bifold Doors and Sliding Windows - any good? 4Jan 19, 2009 6:40 pm Sure will. The only thing is the Aneeta aren't frameless as such, they still need a perimeter frame around each sash. If you are going to do that you may as well just go for framed bifolds, they are much more weather resistant and a lot cheaper to boot.
At the end of the day, its up to you and what you want from your money.
