Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Dec 30, 2008 6:38 pm another question already....oh i really don't know anything about windows!
is it better to use multi lock locations on the window than obscure much needed daylight? does anyone know the amount of light you lose compared to flyscreens? Re: safety screens block out too much light?? 2Dec 30, 2008 6:51 pm Windows are really no more secure than the glass and the construction of the window. Anything other than laminated glass can be opened with a brick. And even laminated glass is only as secure as the glass is held in the frame. If the glass is not siliconed then it can be pulled right out of the frame. But any serious thief can even overcome laminated glass. We cut laminated glass in the factory with a glass cutter and flame from methylated spirits - not exactly science.
If someone wants to get in, they will get in... I think flyscreens cut down light by around 30% and security screens with flymesh would be the same again, taking you to around 50%. Oddly, security screens on windows are only popular in Queensland - everywhere else we don't bother. its 8pm here at the moment, muggy as hell, and its still 30.2 according to BOM mind you i have the ac running but the main reason id never not have them is to give you a pretty good level of security when having the windows open during the night, anyone getting in through a security screen will probably wake you up, plain old fly screen is a sinch to get through Blog - http://snakedr.blogspot.com/ Build Thread - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=12084&p=307406#p307406 Status - PCI 15/10. i know thief's will always find a way to get in if they want to but i agree with Billdsl....it is better than nothing! at least you can hear glass break and i'm sure you can hear the disturbance of a safety screen. these rooms are downstairs on ground level, they will be the kids rooms (eventually)...i think i'll want to sleep and not have to either check on them constantly or leave them in closed up rooms through summer! but then they do cut out more light! i don't know....only being able to open the windows 100mm or what ever the security opening is...isn't much on a muggy night! on another forum (not building related) they have an emoticon where the smiley is hitting it's head against a brick wall...haha...that would be appropriate now! Re: safety screens block out too much light?? 5Dec 31, 2008 1:20 pm We sleep with open windows in Melbourne too (to let the heat in).
You can use the stainless mesh in the flyscreens instead of security grills. Either the standard stuff or the thicker stuff used for security doors. BUT - I would rather have my stuff nicked than risk my kids not being able to get out of a window if there was a fire. Restrict the opening using a vent lock or fit a burglar alarm to the window. I guess you can alarm the window in a semi open position so that the alarm sounds if it is interfered with. The screens must stop as much airflow as they do light anyway. Ed That's why you get the ones that open from the inside. Easily managed by kids to get out in an emergency, and good security and airflow. Re: safety screens block out too much light?? 7Dec 31, 2008 5:08 pm hadn't thought about reduction of air flow...good point!
would definitely go for easy open from inside if we do it. not worried about stuff being stolen just don't like the idea of a 900x900 opening with a bit of flimsy fabric with exterior ground height at about 900 from sill....i'd be scared if i were a kid! FH thinks we should just put in a good fence and security lighting and go with normal flyscreens...thoughts?! am i just being an over the top worrier?! Re: safety screens block out too much light?? 8Jan 05, 2009 10:25 pm years ago my parents used to place dowell rods in the window
tracking. they would open the window say 20cm for breeze then dowell for the rest. i cant understand the point of security screens sometimes when its only protecting the opening section. Perhaps as a deterring a possible break-in. as people have mentioned, cutting glass or a brick as easy ways. Yep they do restrict it = but the constant ariflow makes uo for it. and the lack of insects is even better Hi everyone.
