Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Oct 30, 2008 9:56 pm Hi guys
So we got an initial quote for the windows and doors in our new home from Stegbar and despite the fact I was sitting down at the time, I'm pretty sure I had a mild heart attack! Yes, we knew timber would be more (double the cost) and double glazing would also significantly increase the cost...but the quote just blew me away! I wasn't sure if i should laugh or cry! Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone had any advice on how to estimate the acceptable cost for timber, double glazed windows and doors (e.g. as a proportion of overall construction costs)...other than just getting other quotes (which we're doing as well).. I have a habit of asking "how long is a piece of string" questions, but any suggestions or thoughts would really be appreciated..the house is approx 36sq of living...mostly 'standard' sized windows....and just the one set of bifolds... We really don't want to forego double glazing because of cost..but the quote has made us a little worried...so hope a few of u might be able to offer some advice!! Thanks heaps Adam Windows as a % of building cost 3Oct 31, 2008 6:17 am Hi
The cost as a % of buiilding depends on number, size and type of windows, the quality, material and who makes them. The cost for exactly the same windows from different suppliers can vary by up to 300%! First, ask if you really want timber - most don't due to maintenance issues - then get several quotes. Stegbar is at the high end costwise. But check some finished projects for other suppliers before you order. It really depends what you want to achieve, if it's energy efficiency then Chris is right, PVC is as good as timber energy wise and can cost you much less. If cost is your main issue then aluminium is even cheaper, EcoClassic's aluminium window has a U value of 3.5 with clear double glazed 4mm glass, and 2.7 with Low-E. Our PVC window is also 2.7 with clear glass and 2.1 with Low-E. If it has to be timber, try Canterbury! And yep, it has to be timber we know the maintenance is much more than aluminium or pvc, but timber is pretty fundamental for us...! I'll have a look into Canterbury thanks again! I’m in a similar position except I’m after sliding 3 stacking doors. I am on a second-story apartment of which the balcony would not adequately fit any bi-fold or… 5 16145 I don't know them all, the first 2 top of your list are best known. Rylock is a good company, Stegbar is for sale. 4 16225 yes it is possible but watch for noise transmission, decouple as best you can. Maybe wider top and bottom plates with 70mm studs to allow the cabinet to be recessed fully 1 6636 |
