Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Oct 10, 2008 9:01 pm Hi, can someone advise what is Safety Glass?
I only see it mention in the final drawing, not anywhere.. It is only indicated in the bathroom and ensuite, just wonder? Appreciated if anyone can help? thanks Blog - http://clageonewhouse.blogspot.com/ Building Thread - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=10886&hilit=milan I am in, with my husband and my beautiful bunny Re: What is Safety Glass 2Oct 10, 2008 10:17 pm My understanding is that safety glass is a legal requirement in shower screens (hence why it is only mentioned in your bathrooms) and also on glass next to entry doors, such as sidelights by the front door; the glass is much harder to break and if it does break it shatters within itself rather than breaking into shards which could otherwise cause major injury if someone fell or collapsed in the shower and broke the screen. Think about how easy it could be for a foot, knee or even a small child to go through the window if an accident were to occur. Safety glass is what they call 'laminated glass. It has a laminate film between two thin sheets of glass. When or if it happens to break, it's all held together by the laminate film. Seriously, your building designer or architect should know the building rules and regulations so i'm confident that what you have complies... It was mentioned to me by a couple of window contractors that you should be mindful in the design stage as safety window increase cost. Hi Safety glass can be toughened or laminated, either passes for windows. Toughened means tempered or heat treated. Toughened glass is what it says, much tougher and stronger and harder than ordinary (annealed) glass. When it breaks, it breaks like an old car windscreen into thousands of tiny pieces that won't cut you. Laminated is as described previously, plastic film bonded between 2 pieces of glass. Usually 3mm glass, 0.38mm film and 3mm glass - total 6.38mm. When this breaks the plastic holds it together and you don't get cut. It is also very good for security as you cannot gain entry easily - but that depends on the window construction as well, as it is easy with most domestic aluminium windows to remove the glass. A good aluminium window supplier will insist that you supply your plans and elevations for your quote, not just a window schedule. That is so we can properly ascertain which windows require safety glass and what wind rating your windows need to be for your home - EcoClassic's aluminium windows are cyclone rated. Wind ratings are critical for your safety as well. So if you are giving your plans to your supplier, you don't need to worry about safety glass - they will automatically include it in your quote.
