Eaves should be absolutely mandatory for all houses. Particularly northern eaves, which shade windows in the summer, while letting winter sunshine through the windows. Your options would be retractable awnings, either vertical or horizontal (western/eastern windows require vertical awnings), or louvered sunshades. Louvered sunshades will be more expensive, but more permanent. Depends on the style of the house as to which will look better. The warning is on the sticker on the door too.
